Syria ex-Chief of Staff Shehabi Dies

A former armed forces chief of staff and peace negotiating team member, retired General Hikmat Shehabi, died on Tuesday at the age of 82, Syrian state television announced.

The report, which quoted the army command, did not give a cause of death.

Former Syrian president Hafez Assad retired Shehabi, who had served as chief of staff since 1974, in 1998 as part of changes in the military's top brass to prepare for the succession of his son Bashar to the presidency in 2000.

Shehabi, a native of the northern province of Idlib, much of which has fallen into rebel hands since a deadly revolt against Assad broke out in March 2011, was a member of Syria's negotiating team with Israel during the 1990s.
