March 14: Lebanon's Salvation is Lebanese People's Collective Responsibility
The March 14 General Secretariat said on Wednesday that the memorandum the alliance presented to President Michel Suleiman serves as a roadmap for all the Lebanese people who seek their country's salvation.
It said in a statement after its weekly meeting: “This salvation is a collective responsibility of the people, and not one political or sectarian camp against the other.”
“It requires that all Lebanese, including those who claim to be unaffiliated with the political camps, to present their visions of the possible solutions to the deadlock away from heated rhetoric,” it demanded.
Attempts to create strife in Lebanon, whether through the unrest in Beirut, Arsal, Sidon, or other areas, target all sides, noted the general secretariat.
“Hizbullah's involvement in the fighting in Syria and its negative repercussions on Lebanon demonstrates the need for the immediate formation of a government that would be capable of tackling these consequences,” it stressed.
“The repeated Syrian violations of Lebanon's sovereignty in the Bekaa require an extraordinary meeting for the caretaker government under Suleiman and the Higher Defense Council in order for them to take deterrent measures that will protect the Lebanese throughout Lebanon,” said the March 14 forces.
Moreover, it noted that the caretaker government's “failure to assume its responsibilities prompted Suleiman to personally intervene and inform the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon of Syria's violations of Lebanon's sovereignty.”
Suleiman handed U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly on Tuesday a memo on the Syrian violations of Lebanese sovereignty.
A terse presidential statement said Suleiman delivered to the diplomat the memo that deals with “the violations and attacks carried out by all the warring parties in Syria.”
The president's move came amid a spat with caretaker Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour who was stalling in referring the memo to the U.N. and filing a complaint with the Arab League.
Mansour, who is close to the Hizbullah-led March 8 alliance, has been criticized by the March 14 coalition on several occasions for ignoring similar requests from Suleiman.
There have been several attacks from rebel-held areas of Syria on Hizbullah strongholds in northeastern Lebanon in recent months.
A delegation from the March 14 alliance on Tuesday handed Suleiman a memo that calls for Hizbullah's “immediate” pullout from Syria and the deployment of the Lebanese army along the border with the war-torn country.
