7.2 Earthquake Hits Off Papua New Guinea

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit northeast of Papua New Guinea in the early hours of Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake occurred 110 kilometers (68 miles) northeast off the town of Taron on the island of New Ireland at 4.35 am local time (1835 GMT Sunday).

It hit at a depth of 379 kilometers and no tsunami warning has been issued.
