An Iranian delegation held talks on Monday with Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam, stressing the Islamic republic's support for national unity in Lebanon.
Chairman for the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of the Islamic parliament of Iran Alaeddin Boroujerdi noted after meeting Salam: “Stability and calm in Lebanon will serve security and stability in the region.”
He highlighted after the “constructive” talks Iranian-Lebanese joint higher interests “that call for more cooperation between the two sides in various fields.”
In addition, he hoped that the Lebanese parties would succeed in overcoming the obstacles in forming a new government.
The delegation also discussed with Berri and Salam the details of its talks in Syria over the past two days where it met with President Bashar Assad and other officials.
Boroujerdi relayed to Salam Iran's support to Syria “because it considers it a main factor in the axis of resistance and defiance against Israel in the region.”
“We informed Salam of our rejection of any form of foreign military action against Syria and the use of any chemical weapons … because they threaten regional and world peace,” Boroujerdi added.
The Iranian delegation is scheduled to hold talks on Tuesday with President Michel Suleiman, caretaker Premier Najib Miqati, and caretaker Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour.
