Poll: Three-Quarters of the French Want Syria Action Put to a Vote
Nearly three quarters of French people want any potential military intervention in Syria to be put to a vote in parliament, according to a poll Tuesday.
Of the 74 percent of people who said they were in favor of a vote, 42 percent said they were "firmly for" a vote, while 32 percent would "prefer" a vote, according to the CSA poll for BFM television.
Along with the U.S., France has pushed for air strikes on Syria to punish the regime of President Bashar Assad for its alleged use of chemical weapons against its own people in an attack near Damascus last month.
France will hold an emergency parliamentary debate on the Syria crisis on Wednesday but Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has ruled out a vote.
French President Francois Hollande can order military action without parliamentary approval though some lawmakers have urged him to put the issue to a vote.
U.S. President Barack Obama has deferred any military action in Syria, seeking Congressional approval at a vote scheduled for September 9, while the British parliament rejected any intervention there in a shock move.
A total of 953 adults were interviewed for the poll.
