Aoun Says Shameful to 'Sectarianize' Oil Exploration

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun on Tuesday warned against turning the issue of offshore oil exploration into a distribution of shares among the Lebanese sects.

“The issue of oil has become complicated but we won't disregard the issue. All the Lebanese are awaiting and everything related to oil and gas is being obstructed, such as the issue of cars operating on gas and green diesel,” Aoun said after the weekly meeting of the Change and Reform parliamentary bloc in Rabieh.

“Someone wants 10 (maritime oil) blocs and another wants to contract them out, but let them meet first so that we can know what they want. Why is the meeting being obstructed? All legal experts are saying that the cabinet can convene and take decisions according to the constitutional rules,” Aoun added.

“Do they want to sectarianize oil? This is shameful. Anywhere oil is discovered, it would be for all the Lebanese and let no one dream of dividing the quantity as we have started to smell something fishy in this issue,” he noted.

Aoun went on to say: “Yesterday, we heard a joke saying that (caretaker Energy Minister Jebran) Bassil wants to contract out (maritime oil blocs) in Batroun. This is absurd.”

Turning to the issue of the Syrian refugee crisis, the FPM leader said: “We are being accused of racial discrimination and they're telling us no Syrian refugee must be harassed.”

He said that “the Lebanese stance on the refugees is a stance of begging from the world with the aim of helping them, but this is not the right thing.”

“We want a drastic solution to the issue of Syrian refugees in Lebanon,” Aoun stressed.

He pointed out that Syria is “18 times bigger than Lebanon and we cannot bear more than our capacity allows.”

“Aren't they able to find an area in Syria for them to reside in?” Aoun wondered.

Asked about the cabinet formation process, Aoun said: “To my knowledge, it's not for the U.S. and Syria to form the cabinet in Lebanon, unless they have spies inside.”

Bassil has urged President Michel Suleiman and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati to hold an extraordinary governmental session to issue two decrees that call for demarcating 10 maritime oil exploration blocs and setting up a revenue-sharing model.

Bassil explained that his step aims at “preserving the oil and protecting it against any local obstruction and any foreign exploitation.”

"Especially against any Israeli exploitation.”

To all Aoun critics. Can you forget your hate for one moment and listen objectively to what he says?

Lebanon_first- It is not enough to state their is a refuge problem to play to the fear of the crowd. Aoun teamed up with HA to bring down the previous government and then voted with them to on this government. To sit here and blame others on the refuge problem is laughable. He is playing to the crowds and coming up with solutions that are 100% guaranteed not to be implemented. first it was to send them back to syria and then it is to establish safe zones in syria. In fact this should have been taken care of by the government (the government that he is part of and helped create) from day one like Turkey did. Like Jordan did. Set up tents and document everyone. that in itself would have controlled it far better from day one. When syrians found out that they could walk into lebanon willy nilly they flocked. Sorry, to me the guy is always a day late and dollar short. I could be wrong but that is how i feel about the whole thing.

Thumb lebanon_first 08 October 2013, 18:38

His solution is to make camps inside syria for them to stay in. These camps would be protected by the international community. There are safe regions inside syria. I know because I have syrian workers who left for adha and are returning. What is wrong with that idea?
Sami gemayel proposed the same idea too. Why hate it when it comes from aoun and like it from gemayel?

Thumb LEBhasNOhope 08 October 2013, 18:52

It does not work regardless of who proposed. It's a great idea on paper but in order to do it, you need a no fly zone and UN help. Neither of which is available. This isn't the first civil war the world has seen. other countries reacted quickly and controlled the refuges on their because they knew setting up a safe zone inside syria was not an option. Our government did not and now their solution is what seems to be safe zones in syria that have no collaboration other then workers going back as you state. can you verify how many people can those zones handle? can you verify those zones will remain safe until this war ends? again, a solution that appeases the masses ears and nothing more. This government failed from day one and are trying to blame others for being in too deep to get out. BTW- just because I support Sami, it does not mean that I agree with him 100% of the time.

Can Bassil and the FPM explain how did he amass such fortunes to build in Jbeil one of the largest malls in lebanon (currently under construction). We know this guy's family and how poor they were. Where is he getting all this money from?

Thumb liefighter 08 October 2013, 21:52

The only solution 3awn to prevail is to kill all the leaders and give him full power, That time if he fails you can blame him. otherwise if 1 is still living , Aoun cannot be criticized.

Poor Quails ΔΔ
That's great, I've never been camping in Lebanon. Isn't it unsafe especially now with the unfortunate Syrian refugees?

there won't be a clean oil extraction without stealing if not GMA took things by hand, his the only one we trust he is the law n judge n the strong government all the others wants to build a company government where normal people are under the law n they are on top of it...God keeps you General so Lebanon might have a chance to rise, i know you need the majority so you can act i hope it will come soon :)

Missing phillipo 09 October 2013, 10:07

Put the whole process in the hands of non-political technocrats, including if necessary experts from overseas, and you'll see how quickly things can begin to move.
I know that this will offend all those political parties and politicians who are already counting the millions that they could syphon off it the process was left in their hands, and it doesn't matter in whose hands, but surely a stable based economic future for Lebanon is more important.

Missing greatpierro 09 October 2013, 13:20

You are right. Everyone wants to secure its share. With Bassil in control the shares are going to m8. M14 are acting this way to secure their share.

Thumb sophia_angle 09 October 2013, 14:10
