The army on Friday arrested two Syrians in the Bekaa region on charges of involvement in the deadly August clashes in the northeastern border town of Arsal, in which several troops and civilians were killed.

“The army intelligence arrested in the northern Bekaa town of Fakiha the Syrians Ahmed Mefleh Seifeddine, 20, and Abdul Karim Ahmed Seifeddine, 39,” state-run National News Agency reported.

The two men hail from the Syrian town of al-Nizariyeh in the central Homs province, NNA said.

It said they were apprehended “for taking part in the assault on the army during the Arsal clashes.”

Around 20 troops and 16 civilians were killed when militants from the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State stormed Arsal on August 2 and engaged in fierce battles with the army.

Gunmen who came out of the Syrian refugee encampents in the area assisted the jihadists in their assault.

The extremists also took hostage around 36 soldiers and policemen of whom seven were eventually released and four were executed.

They are threatening to kill more captives if Lebanese authorities do not release Islamist prisoners held in Lebanon.
