Rockets Fired from Syria Hit Israeli-Held Golan

At least two rockets fired from Syria hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday prompting Israeli forces to return fire, the army said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties on the Israeli side.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later warned that Israel was "ready to respond with force" to any attack.

Israeli army spokesman Peter Lerner said the Syrian fire was "intentional, not spillover from the Syrian civil war" as has sometimes been the case in the past.

In September the army fired at a Syrian military position in response to what it said was stray fire from fighting between soldiers and Islamist rebels close to the armistice line on the Golan.

There has been repeated fire across the ceasefire line since the uprising in Syria erupted in March 2011, not all of it stray.

In August, five rockets fired from Syria hit the Israeli-occupied sector of the Golan Heights and, in July, Israel shelled Syrian army positions when a rocket struck its territory.

Tensions have soared along the ceasefire line since a January 18 air strike attributed to Israel killed six Hizbullah fighters and an Iranian general near Quneitra on the Syrian-held side of the strategic plateau.

Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said Friday that Israel was prepared for any retaliation by Lebanon's Hizbullah, which is operating in Syria in support of President Bashar Assad.

"Israel will hold responsible governments, regimes and organizations on the other side of our northern borders over any violation of Israel's sovereignty, or an attack on soldiers or civilians," he said during a tour of the Golan and the nearby border with Lebanon.

Israel has deployed its Iron Dome missile defense system in the north, where local media say it is amassing tanks and infantry reinforcements.

The Israeli army said that after Tuesday's rocket attack it evacuated visitors from the Mount Hermon ski resort near the armistice line and security sources said farmers were told to leave their fields and go into bomb shelters.

Police said they had set up roadblocks to stop civilians entering the area.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometers of the Golan from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and annexed it in 1981 in a move never recognized by the international community.

Syria and Israel are still officially in a state of war.

Lebanese are different from Iraqi just as we are different from French. Look I am against provoking Israel. However what business does Israel have repeatedly taking shots at HA in Syria? Even Lebanon they are stealing our water. Israel is provoking a fight. No Lebanese or Syrian is attacking them so why are they starting problems.

Thumb the_roar 27 January 2015, 14:36

excellent post Zahle.

Thumb justin 27 January 2015, 14:43

What business is it of HA to be in Syria in the first place. Ask that question first. If HA was truly a resistance it would be in Lebanon preventing Israel from stealing our water as you say. HA is not a resistance and was never one. It is a sectarian militia that protects the shia only.

excellent post Zahle.

Lmaoooooooooooooooo Roar please don't fool us with your sudden "unity" stance. If any M14er said he was against provoking Israel, you'd call him a Zionist traitor.

Thumb the_roar 27 January 2015, 14:50

Justin obviously doesn't see IS, Nusra Qaida as a threat to Lebanon.

Hence no need to reply as to why HA are in Syria.

.Southern_. 1 min ago
south Lebanon is a mix of all sects, thus its liberation meant for all....besides, when HA was engaging with the terrorists on the Syrian border, it wasn't defending the Shia.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha right Southern, that's why Hezbollah were "protecting Shia border villages" then they were "protecting Shia shrines" in Syria, before finally acknowledging their outright participation in the conflict.

The bomb sirens Israel, remember those? Better late than never.

Thumb justin 27 January 2015, 15:15

nickjames more than adequately answered your comment. Nassrallah himself proclaimed he sent fighters ( I consider them terrorists) to syria to defend shia villages and shrines. He did not say Christian villages or otherwise. He later embellished and polished his speech to say HA was fighting in Syria to prevent the downfall of Assad. In his latest speech he said he was in Syria to defend Islam. Now, you pick and choose what applies and I am sure more excuses will be forthcoming from nassrallah.

Provoke and provoke and provoke, can't you sense that every time you put us in a war with Israel our debt goes up and up due to los of all economic opportunities, destroyed infrastructure, people are sick ... really sick ...from a militia controlling our destiny when they are fine getting support from Islami. REP Public or Iran.

Thumb nickjames 27 January 2015, 15:48

Roar, it isn't Zahle's views I'm questioning, it's yours. You agreeing to "neutral" views is a total farce.

Thumb joebustani 27 January 2015, 15:49

bless anyone person, entity, organization, brigade or country that inflicts pain and suffering, death, torture, and destruction upon the iranian sectarian terrorist militia and its members, supporters or followers wherever they may be.

More to come, don't take your shoes off.

Thumb nickjames 27 January 2015, 17:10

That's right. Because many times other people have said they don't want a war with Israel and you say we're being subservient to the Zionists. And now by agreeing with Zahle you're trying to portray yourself as someone who doesn't want war with Israel when in reality you're a stupid Aouneh twat who would see the whole country destroyed as long as Aoun gets the kerse.

Thumb the_roar 27 January 2015, 17:37

James, seek help & run from one argument to the next like a chook with no head.

1stly it was I who agreed with please show me one post where I have ever said your a subservient of the Zionist.

2ndly...I wish no wars for anyone & have always made this clear.
It is you who cheers wars, be it Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afgan etc.

please seek help. you run from article to article arguing a diff course each & everyday.....have a day off dude.

Missing peace 27 January 2015, 17:49

Thumb nickjames 27 January 2015, 18:00

now please show me one post where I have ever said your a subservient of the Zionist.

Looooool you would say please, it's like I have this Word doc of all your posts you ever made on this site, and I just have to find the right post...

Roar, don't ask me to show you a post where you said or didn't say something. The only time I could show you something is of it's from another article on the same day or the day before.

You wish no wars for anyone, really? Last I checked you support Hezbollah fighting in Syria, thus you are supporting a war. You are also supporting Hezbollah against Daesh, which is a war between two terrorist organisations.

Thumb nickjames 27 January 2015, 22:37

So what I should say is "hey friends (like Texas, M11er, among others), can you please look through your books and find me a post where Roar said..."

2ndly..I support anyone stopping the threat from reaching Lebanon.
LAF & HA are both doin a splendid job...only Isil lovers have a problem with either.

-- Pff same lame argument. If Hezbollah was repelling a takfiri invasion, it would have thousands of fighters on the border INSIDE Lebanon, it would be erecting walls, observation posts, barbwire fences, hell, even laying land mines; instead of leaving the borders wide open and confronting them only in Brital.

You're pathetic Roar. You ought to feel ashamed about yourself. You're a Christian and you support an Islamic terrorist militia all because of your senile general (who previously called Hezbollah terrorists). Go get some sleep, wake up tomorrow and start making changes in your life.
