Arrest Warrant Issued for Mawlawi as Video of His Arrest is Released

Military Investigative Judge Nabil Wehbi on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Salafist activist Shadi al-Mawlawi, whose arrest in Tripoli on Saturday by General Security agents had sparked three days of deadly violence in the northern city.

Alongside Mawlawi, the judge also interrogated Hamza Mahmoud Tarabay and Qatari national Abdul Aziz al-Atiya. The two were released on bail while Atiya was also banned from traveling.

Wehbi is scheduled to interrogate three other suspects on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, state commissioner to the military court Judge Saqr Saqr charged Mawlawi with belonging to an “armed terrorist group.”

The National News Agency said five other people faced a similar charge.

Meanwhile, various media outlets have aired the video of Mawlawi's arrest.

His arrest by the General Security Department on Saturday for allegedly contacting a terrorist organization sparked gunbattles between the rival Tripoli neighborhoods of mainly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, whose residents are Alawites and backers of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The fighting with machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades has left at least eight people dead.

His seizure drew widespread condemnation after the agency lured him to an office of Finance Minister Mohammed Safadi’s welfare association under the pretext that he would receive health care.

But the General Security remained mum on the case.

Media reports have said that Mawlawi, an Islamist and an avid supporter of the Syrian revolution against Assad, has lately visited Syria.

And we all fall Down.....

Missing youssefhaddad 14 May 2012, 14:33

Is the arrest of Al Mawlawi, fair or unfair, worth the destruction and the terrorizing of the civilain populace?
When would those ready to fight, from both sides, understand that their blood is cheaply ecploited by their leaders? It is Like all the previous years of civil war did not prove to them that the only winners are their leaders and the enemies of lebanon whom they work for.

Missing realist 14 May 2012, 21:44

And death to FAYEZ KARAM the traitor!! who got out of jail in a year, and then you wonder why we are heading towards civil war? idiot.

The current Lebanese government keeps alienating the Sunnis in Lebanon to what end? Belonging to the armed terrorist militias of Hizballa, Amal, Baath etc...is okay but not others!!! NO ONE should be armed in Lebanon except the state.

Thumb Bandoul 14 May 2012, 16:54

@mowaten, you support a group of militants in possession of illegal weapons who do not derive their authority from the state or any constitutional document. This group has used its weapons to kill fellow Lebanese citizens, kidnap enemy soldiers, spark a war with the enemy which resulted in the murder of 1200 Lebanese civilians, the loss of millions of dollars in tourism revenue and billions of dollars in infrastructure destruction. This group has also built its own illegitimate intelligence and telecom infrastructure and has silenced at gunpoint those Lebanese who object to their illegal activities. You are in no position to lecture anyone on anything because you are dishonest and a coward and you don't care about what your fellow Lebanese want.

Thumb Bandoul 14 May 2012, 16:55

@mowaten, continued...

You're just smug and happy because your party's illegal guns do the talking for you. Conclusion, your party ARE terrorists and you are free to support their lawlessness as long as you have the decency to admit, that without your party’s illegal weapons, you would both fold like a cheap tent in mildly windy weather and then permanently forgotten.

Missing allouchi 14 May 2012, 19:27

mowaten, you don't know anything about Salafists and you generalize too much. You and other idiots keep using the salafists as a tool to frighten people...that will not work...enough. You are like a broken record with salafist, KSA, Israel and USA!!! boring...Hizballa is a terrorist organization not only to the whole world but also to most Arabs and Lebanese...got it? People like you are so narrow minded that they are unable to see the truth...ya haram ;)

Thumb Bandoul 14 May 2012, 19:36

@mowaten, your cause is not the cause of the Lebanese and without your guns; you cannot force it down our throat at gunpoint. You know it, I know it and the whole world knows it. You will continue to perpetuate the bold face lie that the weapons in the hands of your party are legitimate but you can’t provide a single legal document that proves they are. You are an unfaithful Lebanese and a fraud plus your loyalty is to your masters in Iran. There is nothing more to be said about you or your Party of Terror and Intimidation and I know you will never stop. I am here to make sure your lies are up front and center for everyone to read. No matter how many times your repeat your lies they will never be the truth.

Thumb Bandoul 14 May 2012, 19:47

@mowaten, your Party of Terror and Intimidation has not returned a single Palestinian citizen to his home and you never will yet you continue to pretend this is your cause. Israel is here to stay even if your roll your eyeballs into their sockets and pretend otherwise. The only way to get rid of your so called Zionist threat is to acknowledge the right of Israel to exit and force it politically to accept a two state solution. But no, that is not what you want, you want to annihilate them you hateful thug you and you don't care what your blind ideology is costing to your homeland. I pity you and I feel sorry for Lebanon for having borne such a hateful citizen.

it looks like hizbushaitan has decided to create a new civil war:
- with the imminent israeli threat from the south,
- the syrian regime imminent fall, ot at least extremely risky situation,
- the internal situation of the cabinet and the failure to achieve anything,
- the refusal to accept a new law favoring them and the fpm in the upcoming elections,
all the above reasons are creating a situation where hizbushaitan is finding itself loosing ground totally, and their only way out is chaos, hoping for another doha agreement which will not come.

It looks like you need to start thinking instead of talking out of your ass.

I think that even the March 14 camp that you belong to are ashamed of you and your disturbingly narrow and limited view of Lebanon and the world.

There is no israeli "threat", when it comes to their greater cause israel and hizbustan are allies against the suni Arabs. After all, did people forget that israeli soldiers were met with rice when they rid south lebanon of the suni PLO? the syrian revolution showed the true colors of all hypocrites and racist genociders like mowaten

Just like I complain about the armed gangs of Hezb, SNP, and their affiliates, I will also complain about such militants as the ones seen in the photo. Not only Mr. Al-Malawi is a terrorist, but everyone carrying a weapon to defend his cause is also a terrorist. So her I go again.... remove ALL illegal weapons and get rid of ALL illegal inhabitants of Lebanon - cleanup the country.

Solidarity with extremists because they belong to one's same sect is the most shortsighted position anyone could take.
As proven by recent history, terrorists end up causing more damage to the adherent of their sect.
Fair or unfair, the arrest of Al Malawi is not worth destroying Tripoli neighborhoods for. If he is innocent there are ways to defend him besides fighting in the streets.
It is so disheartening that lebanon is still a very ill nation and that confessional conflicts are so easy to inflame!

Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi said on Monday that the way Lebanese citizen Shadi al-Mawlawi was arrested was “wrong.”

“The officer responsible for arresting him this way will be punished,” Qortbawi told OTV.

He also said that Mawlawi was arrested “because he participated in prayers with a group of people from different nationalities.”

if those claiming that hezb has the right to have weapons should then also acknowledge that ALL parties in lebanon can get the same arsenal...

why one party can get weapons and not the others? that is the logic of M8 leading to the rearming of lebanese...

so M8 don t complain and be happy everyone wants to follow the example of hezbollah! and assume the consequences of your behavior.

it s mathematical: if one party can get arms with the consent of the gvt then the others will feel the urge to get some too....

@LameExcuseThrower, why don't you be an honorable citizen who respects the laws of his country by presenting us with the legal document that legitimizes the weapons in the hands of your Party of Murdering Thugs instead of quoting that Harriri legalized them? By the way which Harriri are you refering to? The one your party already assassinated or the one your Party is trying to assassinate?
