Unknown gunmen on Monday attacked al-Jadeed television’s headquarters in the Beirut neighborhood of Wata el-Msaytbeh, opening fire on the building, hurling Molotov bombs and setting fire to tires.

“Masked attackers assaulted the employees and burned tires after trying to storm the building,” al-Jadeed news director Mariam al-Bassam told MTV.

“Four masked gunmen opened fire outside al-Jadeed's building and hurled Molotov bombs that caused a fire in the building's entrance,” reported LBC television.

The Internal Security Forces’ Intelligence Bureau managed to arrest one of the attackers, identifying him as Wissam Alaeddine.

“According to preliminary investigations, Wissam Alaeddine, who has been arrested for attacking al-Jadeed television, has a criminal record,” al-Jadeed reported.

Al-Jadeed said Speaker Nabih Berri telephoned the channel, condemning the attack and stressing that Alaeddine is not a member of AMAL Movement.

Speaking to reporters outside al-Jadeed’s building, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said “Wissam Alaeddine has a criminal record and he has recently been engaged in a spat with army intelligence agents.”

Charbel vowed to arrest the rest of the attackers.

For his part, Information Minister Walid al-Daouq condemned the attack during a telephone interview with al-Jadeed, calling on the judiciary to take the relevant measures.

The attack came after Sheikh Ahmed al-Assir launched a scathing attack on Hizbullah and AMAL during an interview with the station.

justlebanese, its called non-biased reporting. Al jadeed criticize both march 8 and march 14 because they have no agenda nor a master to please. They report things without sugarcoating it for the sake of their political bloc. If only the rest of our media could be like that. Al jadeed is hated by all lebanese parties because it exposes them all, it is not secterian nor a slave.

Thumb lebneneh 26 June 2012, 16:40

@FT - no one is completely unbiased because everybody has an opinion but the better the journalist is the less they incorporate their own opinion while reporting but as far as TV stations go al jadeed is the least biased by faaaaaaaar!

I'm sick and tired if reading such crap. These cats of terrorism are becoming a part of our daily life. Naharnet and the press should label this as terrorism, not simply as an 'attack'.hopeless country.

1- "Already has Criminal Records and attached the security forces?" Get him off the street and put him in Roumyieh for some behavior training along with the rest of the gang.
2- Start receiving donations to build more and bigger jails.

Far too many hotheaded goons running amock on our streets. Put them all away. It starts by punishing the smallest crimes , like illegal parking, the cursed moto riders of beirut, petty corruption in every aspect of state life, and list is as long as the catalogue of lies we get from our politicians, most of them longstanding thugs.

Berri is a liar and is the biggest ganagster in lebanon. The gunmen are well know and the names are revealed, so labeling the headeline with "unknown gunmen is false and wrong reporting".

Agree. He does it very well charismatically and politely that saw and still see many politicians fall for him over and over and reelected him as speaker of the house. I am hopeful that that is it for him, he will be kicked out this time around.

When outlaws get support from heavily armed parties to do their dirty work for them, this is what you get...As simple as that
Every party in Lebanon have (ortet ze3ran) that they do not necessary belong to them officialy so that when someone is caught, the authorities cannot pin them to the involved party, Albatal, is an az3ar paid by Amal

A: We do not want to do that, we need them to do the dirty work.

This is an actual conversation between a supporter of a party and the party high ranking member..

Wadad: We all care for this country, the problem is we are not aligned into understanding rights & obligations..These civil basics should be tought to all at a young age, the family plays huge role in that, unfortunately, most of the lebanese families are driven by tribel beliefs affecting the youngsters..The civil educational system is screwd up resulting deletion of feeling of MOUATINIEH..

Missing gcb1 26 June 2012, 22:05

Yea, go ahead and see one side of the argument. If you care too much about your country, you'd educate yourself and realize the broader picture, and that the Lebanese sectarian political and societal system is broken.

A new liberal movement that prioritizes the economy and free markets will allow the people to seek past religious and political barriers and weaken our broken and incompetent political parties. This will lead to a mass appeal from the broad population to demand more accountability from our politicians and force them to actually serve the Lebanese people rather than point fingers. Only then will we have a strong state that is able to assume a monopoly of weapons.
