Report: Development of Qlaiaat Airport Provides Thousands of Job Opportunities

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

The transformation of the Qlaiaat airport in the North into a large-scale facility would provide 6,000 new job opportunities on the first year of its operation, An Nahar daily reported on Wednesday.

The number of jobs available would increase to 21,000 in 2018, according to studies that have also set the cost of putting the Rene Moawad airport back into operation at 90 million dollars.

The first stage of any such future project would include the rehabilitation of the runway, the buildings and fuel warehouses at a cost of 45 million dollars, An Nahar said.

The facility that lies only seven kilometers from the northern border with Syria lies on a land of 5.5 million square meters and is connected to major local and international highways.

According to experts, its location is more important than that of Beirut airport for lying in an area that is not easily affected by storms and climate change.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Najib Miqati tasked Public Works Minister Ghazi Aridi to prepare a feasibility study on the possibility of operating the airport after a suggestion by Finance Minister Mohammed Safadi to allow Middle East Airlines to use it.

MEA used to operate three internal flights per week between the North and Beirut in 1988-1989.

Qlaiaat airport saw some activity during the Lebanese Army’s battles with Fatah al-Islam militants in the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared in 2007.

each government job destroys 3 jobs in the private sector

This will be good news but i reckon if they start working on the Airport now it could be finished in 5-10 years, Not to mention the terrible road networks that lead there.

Missing shark15 26 September 2012, 10:42

I think it's a great idea and yes a number of airports would bring benefits but in time each airport will serve a unique purpose. Partitioning Lebanon? What a load if crap and I can't understand the mentality of some people and how racist they are in such a small country. Face the facts Lebo land is and will always be a mixed society, people like me who don't live there so it for its openess and tolerance of all kinds but the more I get on this site the more I realise the narrow minds Lebanese people have. I work with Jews, I eat with Catholics, I am Muslim and my friends are Hindu. Respect and accept we all have differences and there will always be extremists in all our religions that screw it up for the rest if us normal people.

Thumb thepatriot 26 September 2012, 19:25

Yeah Karim, I support that. You surely can keep Hezbollah, their weapons, the hashish plantations, the Mokdads, Amal, Aoun, Bashar's shabiha, live in an alcohool free land, and bleed yourself to death at ashoura! We will have all the moderates and open minded people who strive for independance, freedom, and modernity!

PS: You also get Assir as a free bonus in the package!

If the lebanese christians have still few milligrams of intelligence they should ALL backup this crucial project. But of course they have sunk a long time ago into their ego and personal interests.

Thumb bigsami 26 September 2012, 20:36

That's one MORE milligram of intelligence than what you have schizo Farsi Motormouth aka BSThrower!

The area will experience an economical boom and infrastructure modernization but most importantly is that when the M8 thugs block the airport road we can divert traffic to Qlaiaat...

Default-user-icon M M (Guest) 26 September 2012, 16:26

The second airport will help build that area of Lebanon which is dire need of development. I think it will make things better economically.

@ lozinaus Its a dream that all lebanese think the way you think. Its a dream that all humans think like you.Hats off to you my friend.

I can't think of a reason why this Airport shouldn't be open. I was personally angered and disgusted by the blockade of the Beirut airport road a few weeks ago. My pregnant wife carried my 1 year old child more than 1km on foot to the terminal at 2am because of the airport road blockade. Next time, airlines could divert to rene mouawad airport instead of Damascus!

I love beer ...i can mix it with vodka....what is wrong with alcohol??!

Thumb thepatriot 26 September 2012, 19:29

Yeah, we do not want to be the hostages of Hezbollah, Mokdads or their other militias! Another airport NOW!

Missing peace 26 September 2012, 19:52

but thepatriot, if you listen to the hezbi supporters here hezbollah only wants to spread freedom democracy and peace to lebanon! that is why they block the roads, cultivate hashish, forbid alcohol and point their guns inside lebanon for you to understand that.....

hezbis are the victims here, don t you see it? LOL!

Default-user-icon Hire_Lebanese (Guest) 26 September 2012, 21:53

They forgot to say that most likely all 21,000 jobs to be created will be given to Syrian employees at a lesser wage. They are too stupid to only HIRE LEBANESE CITIZENS!!!

Default-user-icon NYC USA (Guest) 27 September 2012, 00:39

This airport is the reason Hariri was killed, according to NSA insider who revealed it back in Mar of 2005. This airport is for the US-Israeli troop deployment and adjoining base soon to come that will protect pipelines and be a R & R station for NATO in Eastern Mediterranean. Its not for Lebanon, its for the NWO occupation after the country is broken up. Thats what the Arab Spring was for.

Default-user-icon Elie (Guest) 27 September 2012, 01:55

Are only a bunch of sectarian kids present on this forum?
In the end people fly to our great capital Beirut, and not to some village on the Syrian border.
Such a new airport is only political hot air from politicians trying to get votes. Unrealistic and unfeasible project.
