Syria Shell Hits Town in Israeli-Occupied Golan

A mortar shell fired from war-torn Syria struck the outskirts of a town in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Monday, witnesses told Agence France Presse.

The shell landed on the western edge of Majdal Shams, some 50 meters (yards) from a house, but caused no injuries or damage, they said.

Press Body Accuses Israeli Army of Targeting Journalists

The Foreign Press Association on Sunday accused the Israeli army of "deliberately targeting" journalists after soldiers fired rubber bullets and threw a stun grenade at photojournalists clearly identified as press.

In a statement, the Tel Aviv-based group, which represents journalists of all foreign media, said troops had directly targeted a group of photographers covering skirmishes at Qalandia crossing between Jerusalem and Ramallah.

Report: Israel to Join U.N. Rights Council

Israel is to join a United Nations rights body with which it has been feuding for years, as a member of its European bloc, an Israeli official said on Sunday.

Speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, the official confirmed Israeli membership of the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) in the U.N. Human Rights Council had been approved and a formal invitation was expected shortly.

Netanyahu Heads to Rome for First Talks with Pope

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left for Rome on Sunday for a two-day official visit during which he will meet Pope Francis for the first time.

Hundreds of protesters demonstrated in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip on Saturday against an Israeli draft law aimed at evicting Bedouin residents from the southern Negev desert.

The government in January approved a bill calling for the relocation of 30,000-40,000 Bedouins, the demolition of about 40 villages and confiscation of more than 700,000 dunams (70,000 hectares) of Negev land.
