Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea noted that Hizbullah is facing a “major test” regarding his recent endorsement of Change and Reform bloc chief MP Michel Aoun as president, reported al-Arabiya television on Friday.

He told the station: “The party will lose its ally, Aoun, if it fails to vote for him as president.”

Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan urged on Friday political parties to “take advantage” of the agreement that was reached on Monday between Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and bloc head MP Michel Aoun.

He said after holding talks with Geagea at Maarab: “The agreement should be expanded to include all political blocs.”

The tensions between Mustaqbal Movement leader MP Saad Hariri and Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea over the presidential elections has not impacted the proceedings of the committee tasked with devising a new parliamentary electoral law, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Saturday.

Parliamentary sources added: “On the contrary, it appears that the two sides have agreed to keep the electoral law discussions away from the presidential elections.”

Health Minister Wael Abou Faour revealed that no new developments have emerged regarding the initiative aimed at ending the political and presidential deadlock in Lebanon, reported the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat on Sunday.

He told the daily: “Had we sensed some Iranian enthusiasm over the initiative, then we would have seen a different approach by the March 8 camp over it.”

Contacts between the rival Lebanese Forces and Free Patriotic Movement are ongoing “on an almost daily basis” on all issues, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Tuesday in the wake of the latest efforts to end the presidential deadlock in the country.

Sources from the LF told the daily that LF chief Samir Geagea “has not abandoned the idea of nominating former FPM head MP Michel Aoun as president.”

Head of the Mustaqbal Movement MP Saad Hariri held talks on Saturday with Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea to discuss the latest developments in Lebanon, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Sunday.

It said that the “prolonged telephone call” addressed the latest developments regarding the presidential elections, most notably efforts to elect Marada Movement leader MP Suleiman Franjieh as president.

Labor Minister Sejaan Qazzi noted on Friday that the political settlement proposed by Mustaqbal Movement leader MP Saad Hariri is “facing obstacles,” saying that a president is unlikely to be elected in 2015.

He said after holding talks with Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea: “The Kataeb Party demands the election of a president who enjoys the support of the main political powers.”

The latest developments linked to the presidential elections have been the focus of a series of talks between various officials at Maarab, the residence of Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, al-Joumhouria newspaper reported on Thursday.

An LF source told the daily: “The party places the interests of Christians as a priority, along with those of the March 14 alliance and Lebanese people in general.”
