Opposition Deems Assad Election Illegal as Moscow Says People Have Chosen their Future

Syria's exiled opposition vowed Thursday to continue its uprising against President Bashar Assad, saying his election to a new seven-year term was "illegal".

"The Syrian National Coalition reaffirms that this election is illegal and does not represent the Syrian people," it said in response to Assad's landslide victory in a Tuesday election held only in government-controlled areas.

"The people are continuing in their revolution until its goals of freedom, justice and democracy are reached."

The Russian Foreign Ministry meanwhile said that Syrians had chosen their country's future by voting in "legitimate" polls to reelect Assad.

"It's unacceptable to ignore the opinion of millions of Syrians who... came to polling stations and made a choice in the interests of the future of the country," spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said at a televised briefing.

"In Moscow the vote is seen as an important event that ensures the continued function of state institutions in Syria according to the constitution of this sovereign country," he said.

"We have no basis to cast doubt on the legitimacy of these elections," Lukashevich said, while acknowledging that "in these conditions, they cannot be considered 100 percent perfect from the point of view of democratic standards."

"At least Russian observers came to the conclusion that they took place in a transparent atmosphere, despite all the complex security conditions in this country, and they noted a very high turnout," added Lukashevich.

Russia felt "disappointment" at the "shallow politicized reaction" to the polls from "certain international partners," the foreign ministry spokesman said.

None of them are but the claim that these were anything but fraudulent theatre is naïve. Considering the number of immigrants, refugees and those living in rebel or contested areas, it is impossible that 73.5 percent of eligible voters were able to vote

people have long fled most rebel areas. the 8 million internally displaced are in regime controlled areas. look at videos that rebels publish all the time, most of the time they are in empty neighborhood and ghost towns, that's because nobody wants to be anywhere near them.

you think anyone in his right mind would stay among people who behead you for smoking a cigarette, or for missing a prayer?
or put a couple of bullets in your mouth if you say something they deem blasphemy?

Idi Amin verified the huge turn out of voters and the authenticity of the votes.

Christopher Rushlau I don't recall murdering anyone but then again I was never a soldier. I can tell from that little photo you proudly display by your name that you were a soldier once. From what you wrote you seem to know what the trick is when one wants to legitimately commit murder. Did you join your army so you can travel see the world and legitimately murder people? How many people did you murder. How many Shiites did you murder, how many Sunnis and how many Christians did you murder? How about aiding and abetting murders, how many Shiites where murdered, how many Sunnis and how many Christians were murdered with your help. You keep speaking about racism, conspiracy and murder when you are the real murder. Did you dehumanize the ones you murdered or supported in murdering before they were murdered. How pure is your heart Chris, are you just a preacher of the kind "do what I say not what I do"? Was the civilian pictured next to you human or was he inhuman deserving to be murdered?
