Guard at Qatari Embassy in Paris killed in attack

A homicide investigation was opened on Monday after a security guard at the Qatari Embassy in Paris was killed and a suspect arrested, the prosecutor's office said.

The circumstances of the killing, including the method used, were not immediately clear. The prosecutor's office said that "the use of a weapon is not at this time confirmed."

Has monkeypox arrived in Lebanon?

A Lebanese doctor claimed Monday that there are at least two cases of monkeypox in Lebanon, as the Health Ministry confirmed that a sample from a suspected monkeypox patient has been sent to France for testing.

The doctor, Mohammed Fahmi Kharroub, a specialist in family medicine and chronic illnesses, told al-Jadeed TV in a live interview that he has diagnosed a patient in Lebanon with monkeypox and that he has been told about “another case in south Lebanon.”

Israeli court sentences Palestinian jailbreakers to 5 years

Six Palestinians have been sentenced to an additional five years in jail for a 2021 escape through a tunnel from a prison in northern Israel, their lawyers told Israeli media. 

The six, already serving life terms for anti-Israeli attacks, escaped on September 6 last year from Gilbao prison through a tunnel dug under a sink.

Finland says Russia suspending natural gas supplies

Russia will cut off natural gas to Finland after the Nordic country that applied for NATO membership this week refused President Vladimir Putin's demand to pay in rubles, the Finnish state-owned energy company said Friday, the latest escalation over European energy amid the war in Ukraine.

Finland is the latest country to lose the energy supply, which is used to generate electricity and power industry, after rejecting Russia's decree. Poland and Bulgaria were cut off late last month but had prepared for the loss of natural gas or are getting supplies from other countries.

Bach says Russia ban is to protect athletes, not punish them

Russian athletes and officials who have been banned from international sporting events because of the war in Ukraine are being protected rather than punished, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said Friday.

Most sports bodies have followed the IOC guidance given on Feb. 28 — four days after Russia began its invasion — by taking teams and athletes out of their international competitions. In soccer, Russian teams were removed from World Cup qualifying for men and women.

Japan welcomes a new U.S. economic initiative for the Indo-Pacific that President Joe Biden is expected to roll out during a visit to Tokyo next week because it demonstrates American commitment to a regional economic order that is not just about market access, an official said Friday.

Biden is proposing the new Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, or IPEF, as an alternative to the Trans-Pacific Partnership which the United States dropped out of in 2017 under former President Donald Trump. Japan played a key role in bringing together the other 11 members of that pact, now known as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
