Security forces killed at least 19 civilians as anti-regime demonstrations were staged across Syria on Sunday, the first day of the Muslim feast marking the end of the hajj, a human rights group said.

Islamists Claim Attack that 63 Killed in Nigeria

A member of Nigeria's Islamist Boko Haram sect on Saturday claimed responsibility for a wave of attacks that killed at least 63 people in the northeast of the country the day before.

Blast Reported in Kenya's Large Refugee Camp

A blast went off Saturday along a road in the world's largest refugee camp in eastern Kenya near the border with Somalia, but no one was injured, officials said.

The explosion appeared to be minor and one of the officials said if it turns out to be an explosive device planted by insurgents it may have been improperly wired. The two officials spoke on condition they weren't identified.

'Wonka' Actor who Played Violet's Dad Dies at 87

Leonard Stone, who played the father who accompanied chronic gum-chewer Violet Beauregarde on a tour through a far-out candy palace in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," has died.

Granddaughter Lindsey Fryman-Borchard tells The Associated Press that Stone died of cancer Wednesday in Encinitas, California, a day before his 88th birthday.

Colombian Officials Say Top FARC Leader Killed
