EU foreign ministers called Monday on Egypt's military to stand aside and allow a peaceful transition to civilian rule after ousting the elected government earlier this month.
Expressing "deep concern" over developments in Egypt, ministers said "the armed forces should not play a political role in a democracy."

The family of ousted president Mohammed Morsi said Monday they plan to sue Egypt's army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, for having "kidnapped" the elected Islamist head of state.
Hundreds of Morsi's supporters, meanwhile, marched to the public prosecutor's office and the defense ministry in Cairo, chanting anti-military slogans and carrying pictures of the toppled president.

Gunmen killed two Egyptian soldiers and a policeman on Sunday in three separate attacks in the restive Sinai peninsula, which borders Israel, security and medical sources told Agence France Presse.
The unidentified assailants in the town of El-Arish shot dead one soldier in front of the television and broadcasting building and another who was on guard duty, and killed the policeman in an attack on a police station, a security source said.

Egypt's new cabinet held its first meeting on Sunday and urged parties to keep their demonstrations peaceful, as a panel named to amend the constitution called on all sides to contribute.
In the latest violence, militants in the restive Sinai killed two soldiers and a policeman. Supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, meanwhile, called for fresh rallies at foreign embassies in Cairo.

A road accident killed 15 soldiers and injured another 40 early on Sunday in Egypt's Nile Delta province of Beheira, a security source told Agence France Presse.
Their bus collided with a lorry on a highway in the province, leaving 15 of them dead and another 40 injured, the source said.

Egypt's interim president on Saturday appointed a committee of experts to amend the constitution that was suspended following the military's overthrow of president Mohammed Morsi, the presidency said.
Under a decree issued by the caretaker president, Adly Mansour, the committee, which consists of four university professors and six judges, will begin its work on Sunday.

Jordan's king on Saturday became the first head of state to visit Egypt since the army ousted its Islamist president, whose supporters pressed protests after a night of deadly clashes.
King Abdullah II, who faces challenges at home from Islamists, was among the first leaders to congratulate Egyptians after the military overthrew president Mohammed Morsi in a popularly backed coup on July 3.

Cairo will "reexamine" diplomatic ties with Syria that were severed last month under ousted President Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's foreign minister, Nabil Fahmy, said on Saturday.
"Everything will be reexamined," Fahmy said of the decision to sever ties with Syria.

Three women died in clashes between loyalists and opponents of Egypt's ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, medics said Saturday, despite warnings by the military that it would crackdown on violent protests.
"Three people were killed and seven others wounded by birdshot and stabbing attacks during clashes between Morsi supporters and his opponents," Adel Said, a hospital official in the Nile Delta city of Mansura, told AFP.

Defiant Mohammed Morsi supporters chanted "Down with the coup!" and "Egypt Islamic!" in Cairo on Friday more than two weeks after the army toppled the country's first freely elected president.
Soldiers blocked one procession of around 10,000 protesters who waved flags, carried pictures of the deposed Islamist leader and vowed to press a protest campaign until he is reinstated.
