Thwarted French Jihadist Brought Up on Terror Charges

An Algerian jihadist sympathizer arrested in connection with a thwarted attack on a church in France was charged with terror-related murder Friday after five days of police questioning.

Sid Ahmed Ghlam, 24, was taken into custody Sunday after he accidentally shot himself in the leg, a fluke occurrence that led to police uncovering an alleged plot to attack at least one church in the town of Villejuif, just south of Paris.

Armenians Mark 100 Years since Ottoman Massacres

The leaders of France and Russia on Friday joined ceremonies marking the centenary of the massacre of some 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman forces, a hugely emotional event that remains a diplomatic minefield.

France Condemns 'Shocking' Indonesia Failings in Death Row Case

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Thursday that the sentencing to death of a Frenchman in Indonesia was the result of "serious dysfunctions" in the country's legal system.

Fabius said Serge Atlaoui, 51, had been the victim of a hasty trial and was sentenced "in a ruling containing erroneous statements" in a letter to Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

French police were hunting Thursday for possible accomplices to an Algerian whose plan to attack churches was foiled when his arsenal of weapons was uncovered purely by chance.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls said the planned attack on one or more churches in the town of Villejuif just south of Paris was the fifth to be thwarted since 2013.

Al-Rahi Urges from Yerevan for World Recognition of Armenian Genocide

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi has urged the international community to recognize the Armenian genocide, expressing fears of further such atrocities against Christians in the world.

Al-Rahi, who is in Armenia to attend the ceremony to mark the centenary of the World War I killings by Ottoman Turks, was quoted by the National News Agency as saying on Thursday that “the international community and people with goodwill should recognize the genocide.”

Hollande Says France to Pay Back Russia if Warships Not Delivered

President Francois Hollande said Wednesday that France will reimburse Russia if it fails to deliver two Mistral warships in a deal frozen over the Ukraine conflict.
