France handed over to Belgium on Tuesday the man suspected of carrying out a deadly shooting in May at the Jewish Museum in Brussels.

A spokeswoman for the Belgian police told Agence France-Presse that Mehdi Nemmouche, a 29-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent, had been brought from Paris to Brussels.

France was evacuating its nationals from Libya on Tuesday amid increasing lawlessness and unrest, a government source said, after similar moves by other European nations.

There are less than 100 French nationals in Libya and they will be taken out of the country by ship, the source said, adding that the operation would be over by the afternoon.

The Lebanese delegation currently present in Mali to follow-up on the Algerian plane's tragedy is preparing for examining the bodies of the Lebanese passengers who were on board, as the results of the DNA tests are expected to take at least two more weeks to be revealed.

"The Lebanese delegation met with concerned French authorities who assured that looking for victims' bodies will take up to two weeks,” LBCI television reported on Monday.

The leaders of the United States, Germany, France, Britain and Italy agreed Monday on the need to impose new sanctions on Russia over its presumed role in Ukraine's insurgency, the French presidency said.

President Barack Obama, Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Francois Hollande, Prime Minister David Cameron and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi "confirmed... their intention to adopt new measures against Russia," the French presidency said after the five leaders held telephone talks.

France said Monday the pilots of the Air Algerie passenger plane that crashed in Mali, killing all 118 people on board, had asked to turn back in a new development to a complex probe into the tragedy.

"What we know for sure is that the weather was bad that night, that the plane crew had asked to change route then to turn back before all contact was lost," Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters in his latest briefing about last week's disaster.

France said Monday it was ready to help facilitate asylum for Christians in Iraq displaced by a jihadist onslaught, saying it was "outraged" by their persecution.

"We are ready, if they so desire, to help facilitate asylum on our territory," Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in a joint statement.

French police have banned a protest against Israel's Gaza offensive that was due to take place in Paris on Saturday, following several similar rallies that turned violent.

The ban, announced by police on Friday, comes in the wake of clashes earlier this month at pro-Palestinian demonstrations in which some protesters shouted anti-Semitic slogans and fought with police.
