Hizbullah is exerting last-minute efforts to convince its ally Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun to resolve the parliament extension crisis, As Safir daily reported Tuesday.

The newspaper said that Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's aide Hussein Khalil and the party's liaison and coordination officer Wafiq Safa sought to convince Aoun's Change and Reform bloc members to resolve the problem ahead of Wednesday's parliamentary session.

Lebanese officials have welcomed Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's speech amid hopes that it would lead to dialogue among the country's rival parties.

“The country needs positive rhetoric more than any other time and this is what I saw in Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's” speech, Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat told As Safir daily published on Tuesday.

The Vatican will dispatch a delegation to Beirut on a three-day visit, An Nahar newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc on Monday urged the political forces to take part in a key legislative session scheduled for Wednesday, in which MPs are likely to vote for extending the legislature's term for a second time in two years.

“The bloc reiterates its stance that the priority is for the election of a president, but the deliberate obstruction of this process has necessitated resorting to an extension of the parliament's term,” the bloc said in a statement issued after its weekly meeting.

Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah stressed Monday that his party is “ready” for both parliamentary polls or another extension of the legislature's term, as he lauded the al-Mustaqbal movement's stance on the recent deadly clashes between the army and Islamist gunmen in Tripoli and the North.

“If we don't extend the parliament's term, we would be abolishing one of the state institutions. We only have three choices -- extension, vacuum or elections,” Nasrallah said in a speech marking the tenth night of Ashura at the Sayyed al-Shohada complex in Dahieh, where he defied security concerns and made a rare public appearance.

Kataeb Party leader Amin Gemayel announced Monday that the party's MPs will vote against the proposed extension of parliament's term during Wednesday's session, stressing that “the priority at the moment is the election of a president.”

“Some consider that this is part of the necessary legislation … but this would totally and ultimately marginalize the principle of electing a new president,” Gemayel warned in an interview with Radio Monte Carlo.

A number of rockets were fired on Monday from the Eastern Mountain Range, reported the National News Agency.

It said that three rockets landed on the outskirts of the Bekaa city of al-Hermel.

Lebanese police will prevent vehicles from entering the southern suburbs of Beirut from midnight as part of tight security measures imposed ahead of the Shiite Ashura commemoration, sources said Monday.

Security is usually tight for the event, but residents said this was the first time police were banning vehicles from the Shiite-majority southern suburbs the night before Tuesday's observance.

The army announced on Monday the arrest of seven suspects in the northern city of Tripoli wanted on various charges.

The army said that suspect Ahmed Ahmed Khalaf was detained for opening fire and tossing hand grenades against army positions.

A Lebanese man who hails from the northern city of Tripoli has been killed while fighting alongside jihadists in the Syrian border town of Kobane, reports said Monday.

They said Alaa al-Hosni, a resident of the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh, died as he and other Islamic State group militants fought with fighters in Kobane, a Kurdish town.
