A European report warned that Lebanon is facing dangers from regional jihadists, while highlighting the threat of Islamists in the overcrowded Roumieh Prison, said As Safir newspaper on Thursday.

The report, prepared by European Union Counter-terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove, explained that western jihadists are threatening Lebanon and its stability, adding that the Lebanese officials' decision to stand by and wait for the worst to happen is not a solution to this problem.

Speaker Nabih Berri stressed on Thursday that Prime Minister Tammam Salam was trapped in an “unconstitutional mechanism” while he was seeking consensus among cabinet members on thorny issues.

Salam “sought to find an agreement among ministers on government sessions agendas before the cabinet even convened,” Berri said in comments published in al-Akhbar newspaper.

Tough consultations over the cabinet impasse led to a breakthrough among the political arch-foes as Prime Minister Tammam Salam will reportedly call for a session next week.

According to As Safir newspaper published on Thursday, contacts between AMAL movement Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil, Progressive Socialist Party Health Minister Wael Abou Faour, Free Patriotic Movement Education Minister Elias Abou Saab, Kataeb Party Economy Minister Alain Hakim and PM Salam led to this positive development.

Marada Movement leader MP Suleiman Franjieh stated that the local situation in Lebanon is linked to foreign developments, while justifying the boycott of March 8 camp lawmakers of presidential elections sessions, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Thursday.

Bishop Samir Mazloum told the daily that the MP believes that the boycott is a constitutional right.

Two rocket launchpads were found Wednesday evening in the al-Hinniyeh plain, south of the southern city of Tyre, state-run National News Agency reported.

Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr on Wednesday charged two arrested men with belonging to the jihadist Islamic State group.

"Saqr charged a Lebanese and a Syrian with belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant for the purpose of carrying out terrorist operations,” LBCI television reported.

Syrian President Bashar Assad on Wednesday hailed Hizbullah's fighters who “stood side by side” with the Syrian army, thanking those who considered supporting Damascus equivalent to “defending south Lebanon.”

“I salute the loyal heroes of the Lebanese resistance, who stood side by side with the heroes of our army,” Assad said in a triumphant speech delivered after he took the oath of office for a new seven-year term.

Rockets fired from the Eastern Mountain Range (on the Lebanese-Syrian border) targeted on Wednesday the northern Bekaa town of Brital, the state-run National News Agency reported.

According to NNA, a rocket targeted the outskirts of the town of Brital, while another one landed between Brital and al-Taybeh.

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat denied on Wednesday media reports that claimed that his Democratic Gathering bloc was willing to withdraw the presidential nomination of MP Henri Helou, deeming such reports as “inaccurate”.

He said in a statement: “Local and regional developments have demonstrated that we need to commit to this nomination now more than ever.”
