Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat described on Saturday the current political situation as “unsound,” stressing that the only way to resolve disputes is by dialogue.

Sources close to Jumblat expressed the Druze leader's annoyance that a certain party decided to boycott the recent parliamentary session that Speaker Nabih Berri called for, in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

Attempts by President Michel Suleiman to bring viewpoints closer between Speaker Nabih Berri and Caretaker Premier Najib Miqati on a controversial parliamentary session have failed, media reports said Friday.

Local dailies quoted informed sources as saying that a meeting held between Suleiman, Berri and Miqati at Baabda palace on Wednesday night focused on the constitutionality of the session that the speaker has called for.

The joint parliamentary committees convened on Thursday to discuss the new wage scale for public employees after President Michel Suleiman signed the decree mid-June.

The committees decided to task Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan, who is loyal to Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, with forming a committee to study the decree.

President Michel Suleiman on Wednesday held talks with Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun at the Baabda palace, in the first meeting between the two men since several months.

The former army commanders discussed “the current political and security developments,” state-run National News Agency reported.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas assured on Wednesday abiding by the Lebanese cabinet's decision regarding the possession of arms in the country's refugee camps.

"We abide by the Lebanese cabinet's decisions regarding Lebanon's safety and the possession of weapons in refugee camps,” Abbas said in a mutual press conference with his Lebanese counterpart in Baabda Palace.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi voiced on Tuesday his “complete support” to the army in its efforts to preserve Lebanon's unity and peace.

He called on the Lebanese people “regardless of their political or sectarian affiliations to support this national institution.”

Baabda palace officials have warned that the country has entered a stage of “legislative-political confrontation” that would only be resolved through the formation of a new government and the resumption of all-party talks.

“The president does not see any useful solution to all the crises or developments except for speeding up a political understanding … that paves way for a national dialogue” session, the officials said.

Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam said he has been informed that Saudi Arabia rejects the interference in his efforts to come up with a new government.

“The official Saudi stance that I have been informed of is the non-interference in the cabinet formation and leaving it to the wisdom of the Lebanese,” Salam told As Safir daily published Monday.

Qatar's new emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Sunday stressed to President Michel Suleiman and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati during talks in Doha that the presence of Lebanese employees in Qatar is not in danger.

Suleiman and Miqati, who were accompanied by Deputy PM Samir Moqbel, returned from Doha after they extended congratulations to Sheikh Tamim on assuming his duties as the ruler of the country, Lebanon's National News Agency reported.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns arrived in Beirut on Sunday for talks with Lebanese officials, a few days after postponing his trip.

Burns, accompanied by a U.S. delegation, arrived in Beirut from Baghdad around 3:30 p.m., state-run National News Agency reported.
