President Michel Suleiman received on Saturday cables from U.S. President Barack Obama, British Premier David Cameron, and a number of world leaders on the occasion of Independence Day.

Obama expressed to Suleiman his country's commitment to supporting the Special Tribunal for Lebanon in order to put an end to impunity.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea called on the rival Lebanese parties to adopt President Michel Suleiman's Independence Day speech as a roadmap to resolve the current crises in light of the Baabda Declaration.

“Salvation can only occur through the formation of an active cabinet that wouldn't be paralyzed, reviving the work of the parliament, the withdrawal from Syria and carrying out the presidential elections on time without any obstruction,” Geagea said in a statement issued by his press office on Saturday.

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri praised on Friday President Michel Suleiman's Independence Day speech on Thursday, saying that it encompassed all that should be said in Lebanon given the recent “unprecedented” local and regional developments.

He said in a statement: “The president's message is the last line of defense of Lebanon's independence and coexistence among its people.”

Lebanon celebrated Independence Day on Friday amid the growing threat of terrorism, the widening gap between Lebanon's political parties and the huge burden of the Syrian refugees.

The country marked 70 years of independence with an official ceremony staged in downtown Beirut.

President Michel Suleiman stated on Thursday that there is no independence in the country when armed groups get involved in a neighboring country's war.

“There is no independence when some Lebanese factions disregard national consensus, risk Lebanon's stability and get involved in the fighting in a neighboring country's war,” Suleiman said in a speech he gave on the eve of Independence Day.

President Michel Suleiman offered on Thursday his condolences at the Iranian embassy over the victims of the twin suicide bombings that targeted the mission a few days earlier.

A myriad of officials, politicians and diplomats have been converging on the mission in the past two days.

President Michel Suleiman reiterated late Tuesday that Lebanese authorities were working on keeping the country at a distance from the region's turmoil, hours after suicide bombers struck the Iranian embassy in Beirut.

“We in Lebanon work through the Baabda Declaration to distance Lebanon from the conflicts, the tension and their negative repercussions,” Suleiman said in his speech at the third Arab-African summit held in Kuwait.

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun condemned on Tuesday the blasts that targeted the Bir Hassan blasts earlier on Tuesday, questioning the government's failure to convene to tackle this issue.

He said after the Change and Reform bloc's weekly meeting: “President Michel Suleiman and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati must call cabinet to session in order to address the latest developments.”

President Michel Suleiman contacted on Tuesday Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Ambassador Ghazanfar Rokn Abadi to condemn the blasts that targeted the Bir Hassan neighborhood in Beirut on Tuesday.

He said: “The terrorists must be uncovered, arrested, and brought to justice.”

Baabda Palace press office violated the protocol after failing to include the name of Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam on the list of attendees of the reception of well-wishers at the Baabda Palace on the occasion of the country's 70th Independence Day.

According to al-Liwaa newspaper published on Tuesday, the press office included the names of Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Miqati but failed to place the name of Salam on the list.
