The Lebanese Forces party accused Free Patriotic Movement chief Jebran Bassil of “leading a campaign against the LF,” describing the election of an FPM figure to the permanent secretary post for this Parliament’s term as a “coup,” al-Joumhouria daily reported on Thursday.

“What happened at the secretariat of the Parliament is a coup on the promises that were given to us. It was agreed with Speaker Nabih Berri that (LF) deputy Fadi Saad would replace MP Antoine Zahra in the secretariat,” said the sources.

First-time parliamentarian Paula Yacoubian, a journalist who is close to Prime Minister Saad Hariri but ran as a civil society candidate, made a scene at parliament on Wednesday by voting symbolically for prominent Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki for the parliament speaker post.

Yacouboian objected after Labaki's name was not read out during the counting of votes.

Speaker Nabih Berri has been re-elected for a sixth consecutive term on Wednesday with an overwhelming majority of 98 votes out of the parliament’s 128-seat assembly.

Lebanon’s parliament is set to convene on Wednesday to re-elect longtime Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri for a six time after declarations in favor of his re-election were made by the majority of parliament blocs.

President Michel Aoun said the Cabinet convenes in a final session on Monday before it turns into a caretaker government by midnight, as he asked PM Saad Hariri to prepare a report briefing the Lebanese on the government’s accomplishments.

Aoun’s remarks came during a Cabinet convention which he chaired at Baabda Palace.

President Michel Aoun received on Monday Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi who “congratulated the President on staging successful parliamentary elections,” urging the parliament blocs to facilitate the formation of the new government.

A meeting between Prime Minister Saad Hariri and leader of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblat did not take place on Sunday as anticipated, amid hopes that the meeting will still happen, al-Joumhouria daily reported on Monday.

The mandate of Lebanon’s parliament --which extended its own mandate for three consecutive times since its election in 2009-- ends at midnight Monday, meanwhile the government gears for its final meeting at Baabda Palace to tackle 59 items before it turns into a caretaker government on Tuesday.

The cabinet will convene at the Presidential Palace and will be chaired by President Michel Aoun to discuss several issues including the problematic electricity file, said al-Joumhouria daily.

The Marada Movement of MP Suleiman Franjieh said that negotiations with ex-PM and MP-elect Najib Miqati to form a joint parliamentary bloc “did not lead to positive results,” al-Akhbar daily reported on Saturday.

“Discussions with the former prime minister about joining the parliamentary bloc which Franjieh seeks to form in the parliament did not heap positive results,” Marada sources told the daily.

Hizbullah party is reportedly eyeing an increased share in Lebanon’s new government amid reports it could “foil its formation” shall Prime Minister Saad Hariri respond to the U.S. “veto” against the party, Saudi daily Asharq al-Awsat daily reported on Saturday.
