'Singapore Girl' Can Now Fly Well Into Her 50s

Singapore Airlines stewardesses will now be able to fly well into their 50s after the airline agreed to add up to three years to their careers, the company said Monday.

Under the new agreement signed by Singapore Airlines (SIA) and the Singapore Airlines Staff Union, junior stewardesses -- who usually start working at 23 -- can fly for up to 20 years from 17 years previously, SIA said.

Britain Celebrates 350 Years of Anarchic Puppet Show

Dozens of puppeteers gathered in central London on Sunday to celebrate 350 years of the Punch and Judy show, an anarchic English seaside entertainment known for its slapstick and casual violence.

On the second of two days of festivities, Punch and Judy men and women -- known as "professors" -- took their hand puppets on a procession in London's Covent Garden, staged shows for hundreds of children and held a church service with the red-nosed Mr. Punch in the pulpit.

Six Hacked to Death in Burundi 'Witch' Attack

Villagers in northeast Burundi hacked to death a woman accused of witchcraft and five members of her family, including a baby and two other children, local authorities said Sunday.

On Saturday "a group of people attacked the home of an old woman called Marthe Kabatesi in the Bwambarangwe district," said Reverien Nzigamasabo, governor of Kirundo province where the killings took place.

British Town of Sandwich Celebrates 250 Years of Sandwiches

The British town of Sandwich will Sunday stage a dramatic re-enactment of the moment when the town's earl was said to have invented the sandwich, to mark the 250th anniversary of the bread-based meal.

Dressed in 18th-century costume, actors will recreate the night when the John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich -- a rapacious card-player -- "called for a slice of beef between two toasted pieces of bread so that he could carry on gaming uninterrupted", said a website for the event.

Taiwan Buddhist Animal Rites 'Killing Millions'

Tens of millions of animals, mostly fish and birds, are dying every year in Taiwan because of so-called "mercy releases" by Buddhists trying to improve their karma, according to animal welfare activists.

The government is now planning to ban the practice, saying it damages the environment and that a large proportion of the 200 million or so creatures released each year die or are injured due to a lack of food and habitat.

Moose Loose Stops Road, Rail Traffic in Oslo

A moose caused transport chaos in Oslo Saturday when it ran on to a main highway then into a train tunnel, halting road and rail traffic, before it was shot dead, police said.

"The moose has now been shot inside the rail tunnel," Tor Groettum of the Oslo police told Agence France Presse after a drama lasting more than two hours.
