Report: Syria Closes Border Gate with Turkey

Syria closed one of its border gates with Turkey and barred Turkish citizens from entering Syria following bloody clashes in the city of Qamishli, Anatolia news agency reported on Saturday.

Turks were not allowed to cross into Syria from the border gate in Nusaybin city in southeast Turkey, which is only a few kilometers (miles) away from Qamishli, the local governor Murat Girgin told Anatolia.

Venezuela, Cuba FMs Lead Support Mission to Syria

The foreign ministers of Venezuela and Cuba are leading a delegation of leftist Latin American countries to Syria to meet Sunday with Syria's President Bashar Assad in a show of support.

The eight-member ALBA bloc's talks aim to "reject invasion and political destabilization attempts of the country by the United States and its allies," Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro said in state news agency AVN.

7 Arrested in Syrian Embassy Protest in London

British police said Saturday they had arrested seven protesters outside the Syrian embassy in London, including three men who climbed onto the roof of the building and waved the Kurdish flag.

The trio were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after mounting the roof of the entrance of the embassy, where they waved the red, white and green Kurdish flag with a sun emblem on it, according to television pictures.

Syrian Dissidents in Cairo to Lobby for SNC Recognition

Syrian dissidents were in Cairo on Saturday to lobby for recognition of an exile opposition council seeking the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

The delegation planned to meet Egyptian activists and party representatives as 90 members of the Syrian National Council-led opposition met in Stockholm to strategies their struggle against Assad.

EU Condemns Killing of Syria Top Kurd in 'Strongest Terms'

The European Union's foreign policy chief on Saturday firmly condemned the murder of a Kurdish opposition leader in Syria, and reiterated concern over Damascus' repression of pro-democracy protests.

"The High Representative condemns in the strongest terms the murder" of 53-year-old Meshaal Tamo, assassinated on Friday by masked gunmen who stormed his house in northern Syria, a statement issued on behalf of Catherine Ashton said.

Syrian Opposition Meets in Stockholm

Around 90 members of Syria's opposition, led by the Syrian National Council, met Saturday in Stockholm to strategize their struggle against President Bashar Assad's regime.

Fifty thousand Syrians rallied against the regime of President Bashar Assad on Saturday during the funeral of Meshaal Tamo, a Kurdish opposition figure slain the previous day, activists said.

"The funeral of Kurdish leader Meshaal Tamo, who was assassinated yesterday in the city of Qamishli, turned into a mass rally with more than 50,000 demonstrators calling for fall of the regime," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Hundreds of Golan Druze Rally for Assad

Some 500 Druze living on the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights on Friday held a rally of support for embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad, an AFP photographer said.

Waving Syrian flags and portraits of Assad, the demonstrators marched through Majdal Shams. "We love you, Bashar ... We are with the Syrian army," they chanted.
