Bank of America Website Problems Continue

Bank of America's homepage and online banking service were experiencing problems Friday, a day after the company said it would start charging a $5 monthly fee for customers who make debit card purchases.

A message on the bank's homepage said that page was temporarily unavailable, despite earlier assurances from the bank that the site had been fully restored.

Verizon Sues to Overturn 'Net Neutrality' Rules

Verizon Communications, the largest U.S. cell phone carrier, is suing to overturn new government regulations governing the flow of Internet traffic.

The lawsuit filed Friday in Washington's U.S. Court of Appeals contends the Federal Communications Commission overstepped its authority in setting its so-called "net neutrality" rules last year. The regulations are scheduled to go into effect in two months. They prohibit Internet service providers from discriminating against or giving special treatment to particular online services or content.

U.S. Fines Hitachi-LG Disk Drive Firm for Price Fixing

U.S. justice authorities hit a Japanese-Korean producer of optical disk drives with a $21.1 million fine for bid-rigging and price fixing, the Justice Department announced.

Hitachi-LG Data Storage, a joint venture of Hitachi Ltd. and LG Electronics, agreed to plead guilty in the case, which was filed Friday in the U.S. district court in San Francisco, the department said in a statement.

Analyst: Amazon Tablet Software Bypasses Google

Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire tablet uses Google Inc.'s software but bypasses Google's project to extend its clout in Internet search and advertising into tablets and phones, an analyst said Friday.

Amazon revealed its tablet Wednesday, and said it will go on sale Nov. 15 for $199. It's based on Google Inc.'s Android operating system, used by most tablets that are trying to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPad.

Police in Shanghai have arrested five people for making fake iPhones, state media said Friday, just as Apple fans overseas wait with bated breath for the launch of the U.S. giant's newest model.

The craze for all things Apple in China has triggered widespread cloning of iPhones and iPads. In July, an American blogger even uncovered fake Apple stores in the southwestern city of Kunming.
