Syrian Shell Crashes into Turkey Town, One Hurt

A Syrian shell crashed Friday into a town on the Turkish side of the border, wounding a Turkish national, as fighting raged in a nearby Syrian town, a local official said.

The shell fired from the Syrian border town of Tall al-Abyad landed in Akcakale in the province of Sanliurfa, smashing into the walls of two buildings and slightly wounding one person, governor Celalettin Guvenc told the Anatolia news agency.

15 Killed in Turkish Army Operation against Kurdish Rebels

Two Turkish troops and 13 Kurdish rebels have been killed in a military operation in southeastern Turkey, security sources said Thursday.

The air and ground operation, launched Wednesday, was targeting members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) sheltering in the mountainous areas near the town of Cukurca in Hakkari province, near the border with Iraq, according to the sources.

Erdogan Says New Talks with Kurd Rebels Possible

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Turkey could hold new negotiations with Kurdish rebels, in the face of a surge in deadly violence in the Kurdish-dominated southeast.
