Finnish President, Suleiman Inspect UNIFIL: Army Will Receive All Types of Weapons

President Michel Suleiman stressed on Wednesday that the capabilities of the Lebanese army should be fortified, pointing out that the military can receive any type of weapons it needs.

“There are no banned arms,” Suleiman said after a short visit to the Headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the southern town of Naqoura accompanied by his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto.

2 Mortars Found Southeast of Tyre, Syrian Arrested

Two mortar shells were found Thursday in the southern town of al-Majadel and a Syrian man was arrested in connection with the incident.

“An (Internal Security Forces) Intelligence Bureau patrol found two functional 60 mm mortar shells in an agricultural field in the town of al-Majadel, southeast of the city of Tyre,” state-run National News Agency reported.

3.5 Magnitude Quake Shakes Tyre

A mild earthquake shook the southern city of Tyre on Monday a day after a similar quake struck the northern city of Tripoli, the Bhannes Center for Seismic and Scientific Research said.

The center told the state-run National News Agency that the residents of Tyre felt at 2:52 am the quake that measured 3.5 on the Richter scale.

The army intelligence has arrested two Palestinians from the Bourj al-Shamali camp in the southern city of Tyre over their suspicious involvement in terrorist activities, al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Pickup Goes Up in Flames on Sidon-Tyre Highway

Lebanese national Mohammed Fawwaz, who hails from the southern town of Saksakiyeh, and a fellow worker managed to narrowly escape death on Sunday as their pickup truck caught fire on the Sidon-Tyre highway.

According to the National News Agency, the pickup, which is operated by Bandar Gallery, was carrying furniture when it went up in flames in the al-Matariyeh area.
