One Ukrainian soldier has been killed and 15 wounded in fighting with pro-Russian rebels over the past 24 hours, Ukraine's military said Saturday, as clashes continued to break a nominal truce.

One paratrooper was shot dead by a sniper in the ruins of Donetsk's international airport, where Ukrainian forces are almost surrounded by rebels, the military said in a statement. 

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Saturday he would have a "robust" conversation about downed Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 with Russian President Vladimir Putin when they meet in Beijing. 

The Kremlin confirmed on Friday that Putin will meet Abbott, who last month promised to confront the Russian president over the downing of the plane, at a summit in the Chinese capital.

Ukraine said Friday that dozens of tanks and truckloads of soldiers had crossed from Russia into Kremlin-backed rebel territory, as five servicemen were killed in fighting that made a mockery of a supposed ceasefire.

A column of 32 tanks, 16 howitzer cannons and 30 trucks carrying troops and equipment crossed the border into separatist-held Lugansk region Thursday, Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said, adding that another convoy including three mobile radar stations had also entered the same area.

The United States on Thursday backed a Ukrainian investigation into the shelling of a school in rebel-held eastern Donetsk which killed two teenagers.

"We condemn the shelling of a school in Donetsk that left at least two children dead and wounded many others," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.
