there was a lawsuit against charlie hebdo the first time they published caricatures, done by the representative council of french muslims, but sarko at the time personally interfered at the trial, on its first day, sending a letter to the judges saying he supported charlie hebdo. the trial never led anywhere.
these double standards, and the denial of equal rights and respect for muslims, is what leaves them with no choice but to protest.
