when the south was occupied who else cared in lebanon? who helped them? yes, that's right, NOBODY.
so when now there is no other guarantee for their safety, and you ask them to drop their weapons and go back to a situation where they are at the mercy of israeli aggression, without providing an alternative defense strategy, of course they are going to say NO.FING.WAY
what allows you to decide who represents shias? it's the voters who chose who represents them, and HA didnt achieve anything without massive support from the people. anyways, HA and AMAL had their fight, it is true, but that was a long time ago, and now it's been very long that they both work hand in hand, so you cannot discriminate one from the other.
ps: some will also say that sadr was sent by iran so your same logic can apply. other will also say that hariri was sent by saudi, and then the same logic will apply -knowing that hariri had gained much MUCH more political power with his saudi dollars- but i'm tempted to say so what? if they have support from the people then they are legitimate.
the army in its current state indeed cannot defend them against israel. it wasnt able to do so back then, and there's no reason to think it can today. i believe that we have to evolve to the situation where it can, and there will be a day where HA weapons will have to be handed over, but this will first require building the army and defense strategy, and this does not happen overnight
regarding the syrian aggressions against sunnis, i hope you're joking here!? are you talking about a few shells falling on the border as a direct result of cross border attacks by FSA and their allies? come on please, i thought we were having an honest conversation here, and i can agree to respectfully disagree, but this cannot be serious.
