Berri Holds Onto his Initiative, Says it Aims at Mending Tiesإقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية
Speaker Nabih Berri stressed on Monday that his initiative doesn't target the jurisdictions of the President or the Premiers, pointing out that it aims at reviving dialogue among the Lebanese and bridging the gap between the foes to end the lingering crises.
“My initiative was set according to national interests,” Berri said in comments published in local newspapers.
Berri's so-called roadmap focuses on a five-day dialogue conclave held by the rival March 8 and March 14 camps at Baabda Palace under President Michel Suleiman and with the participation of Premier-designate Tammam Salam.
His proposal lies in discussing the form and policy statement of the future cabinet, reviving talks on a new electoral law, supporting the military to deal with arms proliferated in several regions, in addition to addressing a national defense strategy, a reference to Hizbullah's arms.
Asked about the forthcoming Presidential elections, Berri said that “it's still to early to address this matter.”
“I think we will not start discussing the issue until March,” he added.
The term of Suleiman ends in May.
