Soldier, 4 Gunmen Dead as Attacks Involving Suicide Bomber Target Army Checkpoints in Sidon

Near-simultaneous attacks on two army checkpoints in Sidon – one of them involving a suicide bomber – left a soldier and four gunmen dead on Sunday evening.

In the first attack, an unidentified attacker hurled a hand grenade at an army checkpoint on Sidon's northern entrance in the al-Awwali area, prompting troops to retaliate, which left a gunman dead and a soldier wounded.

According to LBCI television, the army scoured the groves that lie near the al-Awwali checkpoint and closed the road for a while.

Soon after the army intensified its patrols in the area, another attack targeted one of its checkpoints in the Sidon suburb of Majdelyoun.

State-run National News Agency said three gunmen attacked the checkpoint at the Majdelyoun-Bqosta intersection, noting that one of them blew himself up while the other two were killed by troops.

“At 9:15 p.m., an armed man crossed the Lebanese Army’s checkpoint in al-Awwali, north of Sidon, and hurled a hand grenade at it,” an army statement said late Sunday.

“The incident left two soldiers wounded and troops fired back at the aforementioned person, which resulted in his death,” the statement added.

“And at around 10:00 p.m., an Envoy-type SUV carrying three gunmen arrived at the army checkpoint in Sidon’s Majdelyoun and one of them left the vehicle and blew himself up with a hand grenade, which resulted in his death and led to the martyrdom of a soldier and the wounding of another,” said the statement, adding that “the checkpoint’s members opened fire at the other two gunmen and killed them.”

The army noted that a military expert inspected the car for explosives and that a probe was launched into the incident under the supervision of the relevant judicial authorities.

At dawn, the army issued a statement identifying the slain soldier as Sergeant Samer Youssef Rizk.

Meanwhile, al-Jadeed television said “the car that targeted the army in Sidon is registered in the name of Mohammed al-Zarif, a member of the group of Moein Abu Dahr, the suicide bomber who blew himself up at the Iranian embassy” in Beirut.

MTV said the four gunmen killed by the army are “a Lebanese from the al-Zarif family, two Palestinians from the al-Sayyed and al-Mir families while the fourth is still unidentified.”

LBCI said the unidentified attacker was one of fugitive cleric Ahmed al-Asir’s supporters.

“After a bomb technician examined the bodies in Majdelyoun, it turned out that one of them was wearing a suicide vest,” Future TV said earlier on Sunday.

Later on Sunday, the TV network said “the army has reopened the road in the al-Awwali area and is staging armored patrols” across Sidon.

You seem like a nice family man. I enjoy your posts. Do you like cooking?

Thumb ice-man 16 December 2013, 04:25

@ Frank: Who doesn't !!!! What other hobbies do you have besides cooking and horror movies?

Thanks @Frank for a cordial discussion. Let's chat soon...

naharnet should clear up those trolling comments, they are pointless and childish.

Thumb _mowaten_ 16 December 2013, 11:11

As for the Lebanese soldiers who keep falling prey to the backward apes of saudi-sponsored takfiris in Saida and Tripoli, may they rest in peace and shame on m14 for turning a blind eye on this treason.

Thumb _mowaten_ 16 December 2013, 12:49

@naharnet: get your act together because this is becoming truly a joke!!!

It's the trolling comments you should be removing, such as "Do you like sandwiches?" & "Do you like cooking?" not clean & argumentative posts where one expresses an opinion.

You're letting the comments section become a circus where a few agents troll users and report comments they don't like using dozens of fake accounts.

Thumb benzona 16 December 2013, 00:12

Sтоp your BS propaganda. It doesn't work anyway, naharnet readers know the truth and they certainly know that M14 is behind the reconstruction of lebanon. They certainly aren't the ones who want to destroy it. Look instead in the direction of the terrorists Bachar used to send to Iraq as of 2003 and now within his own country. They're most likely behind this attack. Hariri, sanioura are Sidonians they do not want nor wish this.

you preferred that nothing was done? keep it in ruins? what a sick mind. Expropriations happen everywhere here in my city, in america and even in Iran. Ask The Grand Ayatollah who controls a personal empire worth $95 billion. Beirut is a jewel for all. The Ayatollah's are personal assets....

I told you, I don't give a damn. It's an isolated incident. Ask your teacher tomorrow for her insight.

However, this sidonian attack is am much more serious matter. It's preoccupying me.

Thumb benzona 16 December 2013, 00:45

I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint you. You and I don't use the same dictionary. I don't aknowledge the Bachari-created word "takfiri". To me, they are moslem extremists and I put them in the same bag as hezbollah. They are the same shite, different logo. So, you already know how I vehemently condemn Hezbollah islamic terrorism, it also applies to copycats with a different banner.

God bless our army! Complete, utter, and unconditional support. No discussion, and no compromise. Anyone with a problem with that, can pack and leave the country as he or she is not a lebanese.

I read that M14 are behind the construction of LEbanon.

"Pity the nation that is full of beliefs and empty of religion.
Pity the nation that wears a cloth it does not weave,
eats a bread it does not harvest,
and drinks a wine that flows not from its own wine-press."

My regards to Prince Bandar

R.I.P Sergeant Samer Youssef Rizk. your death will be avenged.

Tell me who's in Sidon? HA and Resistance Brigade and HA allies, Tripoli: Eid and HA, Arsal and neighboring Bekaa: HA and allies. Pathetic logic.

Thumb cedars2 16 December 2013, 08:42

You see HA its time to support the army and hand over your weapons to it to support it since the reason you are running around with your weapons is the Israeli threat according to the "Taef". How have you deviated from fighting Israel to fighting Syrian children? Maybe get a GPS check your co-ordinates, you are going in the wrong direction!!!

There is no more excuse for your weapons, its the army that is on the border now.

After saying this it will be interesting to hear the M8 BS excuses....
If you have an excuse pls keep it coherent and try to make sense..

Thumb cedars2 16 December 2013, 08:43

If you are truly a resistance party created to protect Lebanons borders then when the Syrian army shell Lebanese areas thats called an act of agression or not? I mean they are killing Lebanese citizens and if youre not a shiite army in disguise then no matter what religion or sect the person is its considered an aggression. sah aw ghalat?

what do you mean????? Flamethrower is still alive and kicking. You scared me there for a moment !!!!!!!

Missing peace 16 December 2013, 11:21

in their empty brains and logic M8ers do not want to understand that till an armed party enjoys the liberty to do whatever suits them, be armed to the teeth and decide the fate of lebanon then mathematically it will develop a counter reaction and opposite gangs would want to do the same.... it is mathematicaland pure logic!

but they prefer to turn a blind eye on this because it suits their low interests so they can throw the blame on others while making people forget that they are the ROOT of the problem....

Thumb lebpatriot888 16 December 2013, 12:19

Missing peace 16 December 2013, 14:45

give us your counterarguments baby.... you are the root of all the problems :)

Missing peace 16 December 2013, 21:45

lol! the defense strategy proposed by M8 is to let hezbis defend lebanon alongside the army but without OBEYING it, free to decide of peace or war...

the only strategy is to let the army as the ONLY armed forces! and integrate hezbis weapons and expertise in it....
but hezbis DO NOT want to obey the state of lebanon...
