Lebanese Soldier Reports for Duty after Deadly Border Shooting

A Lebanese soldier, who went missing after a shooting on an Israeli army unit on Sunday night, has returned to his post, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA and Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) said that the soldier reported to duty in Naqoura on Monday morning after hiding in a bush throughout the night.

The Israeli army said in a statement on Sunday that an Israeli soldier was killed by a “Lebanese army sniper” near the Naqoura border post.

It identified the dead soldier as Shlomi Cohen, 31, from the northern Israeli city of Afula.

The Lebanese army has not yet issued a communique to confirm whether the soldier had opened fire on the Israeli unit.

Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli army spokesman, said Israel had protested "this outrageous breach of Israel's sovereignty" with U.N. peacekeeping forces and heightened its state of preparedness.

"We will not tolerate aggression against the state of Israel, and maintain the right to exercise self-defense against perpetrators of attacks against Israel and its civilians," he said.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in statement that both sides were "cooperating with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon to ascertain the facts.”

He “reminded the Lebanese Armed Forces of their responsibilities under Security Council resolution 1701 and strongly urged both sides to exercise restraint.”

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said Israel would be meeting with UNIFIL to request an explanation from the Lebanese army about whether the soldier acted on his own, without orders, and what the Lebanese army would do to prevent such incidents in the future.

When Israel will take its revenge from this soldier (his days are counted), we don't want to see those tears like always we get about the brutal Israel bla bla bla. cry that Lebanon knows so well and made of it a profession.
It seems that people of Lebanon wouldn't be happy unless every couple of years all Lebanese infrastructure will be in ruins.

I literally cannot believe it. This guy gets 7 votes up talking about revenge, killing lebanese, and destroying lebanon's infrastructure, and the guy below saying long live the army gets 7 votes down? I thought lebanese were patriotic, and also thought this is a LEBANESE website.

Hey danny, your agitating flyovers and constant transgressions over the border aren't welcome. You have no one but to blame but your idf who abuses lebanon's sovereignty on a daily basis!

Long lve the Lebanese Army! And give that soldier a medal :)

Thumb liberty 16 December 2013, 12:33

The Israeli soldier was killed inside the blue line by a lebanese sniper. Don't twist the facts. The United Nations confirmed he was killed inside Israeli territory. Online heroics cost nothing, but when Israel retaliates and bomb you back to the stone age, I would like to see that medal you are recommending.

two great jhypocrits speaking about the lebanese army....

Thumb benzona 16 December 2013, 14:53

We should make sure israel get's movaten's family address instead of the usual random bombing. This rogue soldier is a disgrace to the LAF. Perhaps the time has come to reform the institution and to run psychological tests before letting anyone carry weapons.

Thumb _mowaten_ 16 December 2013, 15:31

want to help israelis against a fellow lebanese? you should be hanged for treason ben of zona.

Thumb liberty 16 December 2013, 17:28

17 minutes ago LBCI: The Lebanese soldier who opened fire at the Israeli soldier did not consult his station before carrying out the attack. Investigations are underway with him at the Defense Ministry.

He should be court martialled for not following the rules of engagement and for nearly causing a war.

to the arrogant poster above:

UNIFIL chief Serra after extraordinary tripartite meeting in Naqoura: Preliminary findings indicate that it was an individual action by a soldier in contravention of the existing operational rules and procedures.

Now mock as much as you want....

Cant believe what you say people, your country has plummeted into smoke and you still talk of HA weapons it is the hall country that is down forever. Everybody is playing with fire. Economy down, Parliament never had any, government down, president, almost down, get yourself together, or else nothing will be left for our children.

Thumb cedars2 16 December 2013, 11:45

You see HA its time to support the army and hand over your weapons to it to support it since the reason you are running around with your weapons is the Israeli threat according to the "Taef". How have you deviated from fighting Israel to fighting Syrian children? Maybe get a GPS check your co-ordinates, you are going in the wrong direction!!!

There is no more excuse for your weapons, its the army that is on the border now.

After saying this it will be interesting to hear the M8 BS excuses....
If you have an excuse pls keep it coherent and try to make sense..

I quote from the Israelis, "We will not tolerate aggression against the state of Israel, and maintain the right to exercise self-defense against perpetrators of attacks against Israel and its civilians," unquote. For decades Israel has been doing just that on us, attacking us at will, yet it believed that we should not respond in the way it is now threatening. Now one Lebanese soldier shoots at an Israeli soldier and all threats come to surface. Let us at least wait for the official release by the state and the UN to know what caused this incident before coming to any conclusions.

Missing peace 16 December 2013, 14:35

hypocrit M8ers praise the GREAT lebanese army while at the same time legitimate a mafia gang to decide of the fate of the country in terms of peace or war instead of letting this decision to the lebanese army...
they are the first ones to spit on the army if it takes stands against their mafia...

more hypocrit and antilebanese than that you will never find....

May our Lord Jesus Christ be with the mother of the Israel soldier. Bless her heart and take away her anxiety. And may YOU all remember that taking someone's life, regardless of who it is, is shameful. Now I know that most of you will jump on my case and remind me of the so called attrocities Israel has conducted against Arabs and I will say this, "no two wrongs EVER make a right."
Marantha!!! The Lord's return is near.

Thumb _mowaten_ 16 December 2013, 15:37

"so called atrocities"?? i cant believe any decent human being can be crying for the mother of an enemy soldier, while brushing off the hundreds of thousands of civilians that israel murdered, expropriated and tortured as "so called atrocities". only a zionist could think like this.

Missing broumanapride 17 December 2013, 03:14

Why am I not surprised by how you tagged me? I'm not a Zionist but a person who believes that human life (on all sides regardless of religion and political affiliation) should be preserved. What? A mother of a Jew does not hurt when her child is gunned down? You are a sorry excuse for humanity... And you wonder why our country is so out of whack...

Missing broumanapride 17 December 2013, 03:15

I would feel exactly the same towards human ...

Thank you for bringing my name into this discussion, but I'm sorry to have to tell you that I only write under my own name, and any attempt by you to blacken me by claiming that I use other names is just underhanded.
