Bahia Hariri Sues MTV, Adel Karam over Parody Picture

Al-Mustaqbal bloc MP Bahia Hariri filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against MTV after a show on the local television channel aired a computer-generated image that was considered offensive to Islam.

The image shows the veiled lawmaker's head placed on the body of a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” and it was aired during “Hayda Haki,” a weekly satirical program hosted by comedian and TV personality Adel Karam.

"Hariri filed a lawsuit with General Prosecutor Samir Hammoud against MTV and Karam,” the state-run National News Agency reported.

The NNA added that both defendants were called for hearing on Friday morning.

Al-Mustaqbal bloc head MP Fouad Saniora had deplored earlier on Wednesday "offending" Hariri, noting that disregarding ethical and professional standards has become a frequent problem in the country, whether in politics, media or in security-related matters.

"We are with freedom but we support a responsible freedom that respects people's dignity and that abides by laws, norms and ethical standards that the Lebanese hold onto,” he explained.

The former premier added: “Things cannot continue in this manner without any legal, ethical and national regulations.”

Meanwhile, the municipality chief of the southern city of Sidon Mohammed al-Seoudi considered that the “offensive occurrence deepened that pain and the sad atmosphere prevailing in the country on the eve of the anniversary of late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's assassination.”

Soon after the TV show aired the photoshopped image on Tuesday evening, several Sidon residents took to the streets, blocking the road near the Awwali River at the entrance of the southern city.

Karam then apologized for what he called a “mistake in the show's editing process.”

"Hariri has a forgiving heart and it is our duty to apologize to her over an unintended mistake generated in the editing process, and which offended a religious belief and the MP,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

The show's director Nasser Faqih also apologized, remarking that “offending Hariri was not intentional.”

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 05 February 2014, 20:58

haha.. hasoon was shown in a much better way and all hell broke loose.. and he wasnt even naked... booo.. so you are the last one to talk about a sense of humor...

Thumb MaddyBaddy 05 February 2014, 21:04

Wasn't taking sides- all Lebo political & other people in power need to chill. That Hasoon incident a few years back was also pretty bad, gotta give u credit for that.

Missing marhaba 06 February 2014, 00:25

Who brought up Hasoon?

I like this justification of yours. Next step is to bring up HA in Syria to justify the burning of tires in Saida cause Booboo can't take a joke.

Note: I'm not saying Hasoon can take a joke (for your simple mind to understand)

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 06 February 2014, 06:44

I brought up Hasoon to correlate the no sense of humor remark by MB. Just for your simple mind to understand. But I'm not holding my breath that it sinks in to that sad excuse of mass you call a brain.

I agree there should be a limit specially when the person is not known to be a party goer or socialite. Privacy is such a difficult matter and knowing the limits is sometimes overlooked by the media.

Thumb liberty 05 February 2014, 21:44

Lebanese media is tasteless, unprofessional, and uncivilized.

Missing VINCENT 05 February 2014, 22:02

How absurd. This is like people in the U.S. who play the "race card" when they have no legitimate grounds to stand on their own principals. For all those concerned, with all due respect, the parody was targeting an individual, here Ms. Hariri, and not a specific religion where the intended target may not strictly adhere to.

Missing VINCENT 05 February 2014, 23:06

And by the way, no specific religion, including Islam has the exclusivity or monopoly over what constitutes proper attire whether in the context of religion or societal behavior as a whole. I am sure whole bunch of Christians, Buddhists, Druz, etc. may find a women dressed in a bikini in public offensive, or your everyday attire offensive. Lady it has nothing to do with your religion. They are making fun of you.

What is everyone waiting for for all the educated generation to leave Lebanon and all the ones who r ready to fight like mercs to tear down our country. WAKE UP PEOPLE

Thumb Machia 06 February 2014, 07:07

She should not be in politics if she cannot take a joke!
What a country of heavy politicians: Nassrallah, Al Rai, Bahia Al Hariri should get used to getting made fun of. They are not gods but human beings with an expiry date.

I myself am for the privatization of telecom,
and bring in as many companies to compete,
because that is when we will not have anymore a disgusting cartel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartel

We Lebanese are still paying extremely costly internet for very poor connection.
It's time we stop this money-sucking cartel.
Enough is enough!

Thumb FlameCatcher 06 February 2014, 12:29

Well, at least she goes through Legal channels to deal with this.

Hassan Kezballah sends his terrorist gang bangers to block roads and set all hell loose when they mock him. He does not believe in the Lebanese justice system and takes justice into his own hands... (Yet, he wants Hariri trial of his murderers to be conducted by Lebanese courts ... what a joke).

She is wrong, along with any religious person, to enter politics since she's religious. MTV did a big mistake, why? Because imagine someone putting a fake picture of the our Cardinal Mar Nasrallah or Bchara in a swimming suit. Of course it's offensive and wrong, this is not only about Islam, it's about any religion. In addition, this is not an "offense to Islam" it's an offense to the MP Hariri cause she IS religious!

NO RELIGION IN POLITICS and vice versa! Fhamo ya ness!
