Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati expressed on Thursday optimism that a new government may be formed soon.

He said: “Positive signs indicate that a new cabinet may be formed soon.”

He made his remarks while holding talks with Beirut Maronite Bishop Boulos Matar.

“We hope that the Bkirki national charter will be translated into actions on the ground,” added the premier.

Matar later held a luncheon banquet in Miqati's honor.

Efforts to form a new government have reached a deadlock, mainly over Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun's refusal to relinquish the Energy Ministry portfolio.

An Nahar daily on Thursday said he is refusing to give the portfolio to any of his allies in the Amal movement, Hizbullah, Tashnag and Marada parties to facilitate the government formation process.

Al-Joumhouria newspaper said however that a major breakthrough was made on Wednesday night when talks between the FPM and ex-PM Saad Hariri's al-Mustaqbal Movement led to a deal to give Aoun a so-called sovereign portfolio in addition to another ministry that has a balancing role in return for granting the energy portfolio to a non-provocative consensual person.

same rhetoric. Different words. Everyone seems to be optimistic about the formation of a government but still nothing.

Have we noticed that we are now well into February 2014? Have we noticed that there is literally no rains? Have we noticed that these fools are still talking of forming a government? Let's notice, please people let's notice, because in all honesty, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, all will come to pass, and these idiots will still be talking on how to form a government. The Winter Olympics, did not distract the Lebanese much, but the Mundial will indeed, by which time 2014 would be well gone past halfway, by which time the political crooks would have been given a respite from our expectations. Guys, let's start planning for the next Mundial, that of 2018, because if left to these sods alone, there will be neither no new government, but no Lebanon left. Brazil first.

What a disgrace to the Lebanese people, a once great nation. Who are they to "govern" us?
