Israel Claims to Hit 2 Hizbullah Fighters on Golan Border

Israel said Wednesday it fired at and hit two members of Hizbullah as they tried to plant a bomb near the Israeli-Syrian border, but Syrian state media accused the Jewish state of targeting its forces.

"Earlier today, two Hizbullah-affiliated terrorists were identified attempting to plant an explosive device near the Israel-Syria border in the northern Golan Heights,” the army said in a statement.

“IDF (Israeli army) forces... fired towards the suspects (and) hits were identified," it said.

The army did not specify what weapons were used to fire at the suspected Hizbullah members.

The incident came just over a week after reports that Israeli warplanes bombarded a Hizbullah position in Janta on the Lebanese-Syrian border.

Israel neither confirmed nor denied carrying out the two February 24 strikes, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the Jewish state would do "everything necessary" for its own security.

Hizbullah threatened to retaliate for what was the first reported Israeli air raid on a position of the Shiite party inside Lebanon since the 2006 war between them.

Syria's state news agency SANA, citing a military source, said that Israeli forces fired four tank shells toward the Golan village of al-Hamidiya, hitting a school and a mosque early Wednesday. It said Israeli forces also fired another four shells toward another area called al-Houriyah, and then opened fire a third time, again toward al-Hamidiya.

It said the attacks wounded seven members of the security forces and four civilians. It provided no further information.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported that Israeli forces fired several tank shells and two missiles toward the Golan Heights. The group said one missile hit a school in the village of al-Hamidiyeh, where Syrian troops were concentrated. The Observatory obtains its news from a network of activists in Syria.

How Sad.... It saddens me deeply when any of HA leadership, members, followers, or towns are attacked. Planting explosive devices is now a crime?!!!

Thumb popeye 05 March 2014, 10:13

I am sad only 2 terrorists were hit.

Thumb .mowaten. 05 March 2014, 11:12

keep being sad, and get used to it. there will be no happiness for you and Lebanon's enemies.

Thumb popeye 05 March 2014, 11:24

If true, then Hassan Nasrallah should be hanged for opening a new war front on Lebanon and pushing us to war.

It's amazing how you are so willing to ignore the fact that they made numerous aggressions and they can't continue to go unanswered

Thumb FlameCatcher 06 March 2014, 11:42

You ignore the fact that Lebanon is not an offensive base for Hezbollah to hit other countries.

You ignore the fact that Lebanon is a sovereign country and Hezbollah has no say in which wars we engage in or not !

It is not a big secret that Israel and the takfiris work together. It's official, still amusing how the takfiris denies their own allies whom give them shelter, medical and military support.

It makes more sense if you say: "the longevity of the Gulf Monarchs is tied to Israel". Security for "cart blanche" for Israel to prosper without getting their hands involved with the Palestinian issue while they live in camps.

Thumb .mowaten. 05 March 2014, 11:12

a bit contradictory dont you think? i thought HA was "spread thin" between south lebanon and the bekaa, and losing about half a million fighters a per day. yet now they still manage to open a front in the golan?

Let's hope the explosives were planted successfully or booby trapped.

If the HA fighters were inside Israeli land, then one could understand, but outside of it?

Thumb Kalzyturks 05 March 2014, 13:16

. Whether Syrian or Israel side.....
the article at hand tells us near the Israel-Syria border in the northern Golan Heights.

According to the article at hand the suspected men were planting an explosive device.

What should the response be?

Thumb -phoenix1 05 March 2014, 16:34

Kal, I only responded to the article as it was written, therefore in all sincerity Israel had no right to shoot at anyone that is outside the perimeters of its borders. If the Hezbollah fighters were caught inside their lands, then it's fair game, but outside no, it isn't. Until now, Israel transgresses against the sovereignty of some of its neighbors, I remember several incidents where Israel was target shooting at our kids that did no harm playing in their play yards, well inside Lebanese territory. very recently, Israel was carrying out military drills, and allowed shells to land on Lebanese territory, so why shoot at fighters that weren't on its soil? We may have our differences with Hezbollah, but it certainly doesn't mean that we should accept it when Israel does such acts.

Thumb -phoenix1 05 March 2014, 16:45

Kal, masalan, only yesterday, I was watching some footage with some colleagues of Palestinian civilians last year who were doing nothing harmful, but toil their farmland, which happened to be about 500 meters from their border with Israel, then all of a sudden, the Israelis opened fire killing some of them. Now is this fair? Can Israel be allowed to do whatever it wants with total impunity? Innocent civilians got killed for what, because Israel it seems is often too trigger-happy? So next time Israel comes to work on its side of the fence, does it mean that I as a Lebanese now have the right to shoot at its soldiers? Just for the record, I react on a case by case basis, Israel is at fault again.

Thumb Kalzyturks 05 March 2014, 21:00

Phoenix,

My analysis is based on this article.

Assuming these two men were planting an explosive device. What should be the response.

Unless we have more details we won't know for sure.

Yes I agree Israel has done what it has done to the innocent farmers & civilians.

But remember the 2006 Israel Lebanon war. The operation that took place there was an explosive device planted on the border fence, being detonated & the kidnapping operation took place.

Thumb Kalzyturks 05 March 2014, 21:02

Also I'll refresh our memory too.

The leader also promised that he will enter Syria to open a new battle field in the Golan Heights.

Could it be an operation was taking place?

Could it be that it was making a point by executing an operation?

These two men could it be just innocent people farming in a middle of a civil war?

I forgot to mention I don't supports Israel's actions.

The mighty resistance at its best. Planting bombs along side the boarder. What? you couldn't find couple of Israeli soldiers to kidnap?
Stupid people. Now you are going to retaliate. For What? You are going to put Lebanese lives in danger again? You are going to lock bunch of school children in a classroom against their will, deploy your rocket launchers in the school yard, shoot at Israeli forces intentionally and knowingly invite a response that would kill the school children and then jump and down to the news media that Israelis soldiers are killing kids where in fact you designed it just to win a propaganda "brownie point"? Shame on you. If you want to get rid of your Zionist enemy, please do so with the Iranian and/or Syrian armies outside and without implicating Lebanon. You may take the Palestinians with you.
