Conflicting Reports over Army Firing at Syrian Warplanes after Airstrike on Arsal

Conflicting reports emerged on Wednesday on whether the Lebanese army opened anti-aircraft fire at Syrian warplanes that intensively hovered over regions the Lebanese border town of Arsal, in the eastern Bekaa.

MTV said that a Syrian airstrike targeted an area near a post for the Lebanese army in village of Aqba al-Mabeeda, prompting the army to open anti-aircraft fire.

However, security sources denied in comments to LBCI that the Lebanese army used its air defense systems against Syrian warplanes.

The state-run National News Agency reported that Syrian warplanes staged three airstrike, targeting the villages of Kherbet Younine and Wadi Ajram on the outskirts of Arsal.

Reports said that several people were submitted to nearby hospitals after sustaining injuries, however, the number of casualties wasn't clear.

Later, NNA reported that another raid targeted the border town of Kherbet Younine, Khirbet Daoud, Wadi al-Khayl and routes that link Lebanon with the Syrian territories.

Blasts caused by the Syrian bombarding of areas on the outskirts of Arsal were heard in Hermel, a Hizbullah stronghold.

Later, the news agency said that a rocket from the Syrian side of the border landed on the outskirts of the Bekaa town of Jinta.

The raid was the latest in a string of cross-border strikes against Arsal. On Monday, Syrian warplanes fired 18 missiles on the outskirts of Arsal and nearby areas.

A December air raid prompted the Lebanese Army to fire back with anti-aircraft guns.

Arsal has a long shared border with Syria, stretching along much of Damascus province and part of Homs province.

That was believed to be the first time the Lebanese army had responded to a raid, though it had previously threatened to do so.

Since the eruption of the neighboring country's war, Arsal has repeatedly been targeted with Syrian rockets.

Smugglers have long taken their goods across the porous border, and since the beginning of the Syrian conflict in March 2011, weapons and fighters have moved across the border too.

Thumb EagleDawn 05 March 2014, 09:53

only because the air raid was close to an army position !

Thumb .mowaten. 05 March 2014, 11:10

no FT, and that's how we want him, and all of Lebanon's enemies: unhappy, bitter and sore.

Thumb popeye 05 March 2014, 11:28

sub zero credibility, alas!

Thumb kanaanljdid 05 March 2014, 11:11

FT be careful don't fly in a low altitude with your private jet offered by Khomeini for your services

Is it not their right to fight those taking refuge in a neighboring country? I mean seriously it's very logical. Syria is not going to wait for their enemy to go on the offensive. They know where the rebels are stationed in Lebanon. Can you deny that there are rebel fighters in Arsal territory?

Thumb popeye 05 March 2014, 11:30

spokesperson for the syrian regime knows exactly what the regime will/not wait for))

I tried to present logic and was only responded to with hate. How do we move forward if the basis of our discussions incorporate hate?

Thumb Kalzyturks 05 March 2014, 12:30

Hammoouds

isn't that why we have an army, & isn't that the armies job. (Lebanese army offcourse)

I hope you don't downgrade the Lebanese army as weak in any way.

never has, never will, or else prove it.

Majority of officers, intelligence, air force, air defense, ballistic , non conventional weapons and logistics are alawites.
I wont even speak about Makhlouf and the 4th division.
So if a sunni soldier or even a general defects, it's only with his ak47 with less than 3 chargers...

Just google : 'alawites in syrian army'

Thumb cedre 05 March 2014, 11:45

why insulting each others ?
Lets speak like civilized and logic people.
U please bring evidence that SAA is not controlled by alawites...
I can prove any day that since the French Mandate, alawites control the army thus the whole country throug use of violence.

and all its adminitration is WASP/Jewish Neocons.
Same in Pentagon, military industrial complex,CIA, diplomacy, think tanks and all other centers of power.

Excellent. Now kick out the terrorist groups and syrian carbomb transport facilitators that have taken up refuge in arsal.

yes flamethrower!

Thumb popeye 05 March 2014, 10:09

5 minutes ago Sources to LBCI: The army didn't target Syrian warplanes with anti-aircraft fire.

Thumb cedre 05 March 2014, 11:51

sorry haboub, i didn't see what u call 'salafist' on the video I posted. I saw lebanese citizens and syrian refugees, mainly women and kids coz the men are fighting bashar or trying to make a living.

Also, one should know that the alawite airforce never had the capacity to identify and pinpoint bomb coz of its soviet outdated hardware.

All it can do is barrel bomb an area, hoping that winds wont push too far the barrel with parachute...

Thumb Kalzyturks 05 March 2014, 12:35

So they bomb the whole town full of innocent lives... Women & children....

Thumb .mowaten. 05 March 2014, 13:32

how many women and children were killed in arsal?
i remember some lebanese soldiers being butchered, i remember some syrian rebels being killed somewhere in the middle of nowhere, supposedly on the lebanese side of an unmarked border, but i cant recall of any non-combatant being killed in arsal. maybe you can help me remember with a credible source?

Thumb .mowaten. 05 March 2014, 15:01

oh, didnt know that. thanks and yes, children should never be harmed, under any excuse.
is it hujairis from the mayor's family?

Thumb .mowaten. 05 March 2014, 20:30

habibi i just denounced it and said there was no excuse for harming children.
in comparison, when dozens of innocents are killed in dahiyeh did you denounce it? or did you find excuses for the takfiris? yea right. so keep your lessons to yourself.
