A foreign domestic worker attempted suicide Sunday by throwing herself off the seventh floor of a building on the Hadi Nasrallah Street in Beirut's southern suburbs.

Al-Jadeed television said “medics and security forces immediately arrived on the scene.”

A video aired by the TV network shows an ambulance crew attending to the maid and dressing what appears to be a major wound on her leg.

“What has she done to herself?” a citizen asks another in the footage as curious onlookers gather around the wounded woman amid the sirens of speeding ambulances.

On March 17, an employee and a secretary of an agency for the recruitment of migrant domestic workers were arrested after an Ethiopian maid filed a report alleging that she was raped and assaulted at the agency's offices.

In 2012, Ethiopian housemaid Alem Dechasa, 34, committed suicide at a psychiatric hospital east of Beirut a few days after she was beaten by a man in Beirut.

Human Rights Watch documented deaths of migrant domestic workers in Lebanon in 2008 and found that there had been an average of one death a week from unnatural causes, including suicide and falls from tall buildings.

Many of the estimated 200,000 foreign domestic workers in Lebanon hail from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Ethiopia.

The most common complaints documented by the embassies of labor-sending countries and civil society groups include mistreatment by recruiters, non-payment or delayed payment of wages, forced confinement to the workplace, a refusal to provide any time off for the worker, forced labor, and verbal and physical abuse.

This is happening all over Lebanon. It's truly a tragedy. These helpers leave their homes and families to come work for the women who spend their whole time at Beauty Salons, Beauty Clinics, Narguileh and Coffee places. If these supposedly housewives would take care of their children we would not have a nasty generation of useless kids.

Politicians take it out on the people. Men take it out on the women and women take it out on the maids.

Yesterday was Mothers Day and this is why we should tell Happy Mothers Day to our foreign workers, not to the Lebanese Mums because they spend so little time at home. Am sure the children of Ibinbatrakrahi have a lot to tell about that, ma heyk? Let's hear them.

As a matter of fact, I was filling the car with gas early in the morning today and found a man and an Ethiopian helper walking a toddler nearby. Guess where the wife was? Tons of beauty salons in the street.

This is a common scene in my neighborhood.

".... her lebanese masters" what a mentality! She has lebanese employers not masters. People were born free and they have no masters, maybe in your dahyeh they do!

The foreign workers here are treated like sub-humans. Most of the population here is so racist, it's mind-boggling in the 21st century.

Lebanon needs to ban foreign workers from working here because it is not safe for them. There are millions of lebanese living in europe and elsewhere who live without having a worker in their house slaving for them so why is it that lebanese in lebanon cant live without a "slave"? Ethiopia and other countries need to ban their citizens from working in a country that is this dangerous.

I see that I cause you ya Wolf rear a lot of upset. In the absence of anything sensible yet coming from you, all I can say is this: that the person who created you in this forum must have had a difficult childhood, stemming from a difficult birth. Man, it shows in every post of yours. Liberate yourself from your confinement, form your predicament and please join the normal flow of people, there's so much you're missing on. This is a special LOL for you and all your family.
