Russia on Friday demanded an apology from Kiev over the "shooting" of a border post from Ukrainian territory that led to the wounding of one customs official, the Kremlin said.
"The Russian side is waiting for an explanation and an apology in connection with this," the Kremlin press office said, according to Russian agencies.
Earlier on Friday, Russian investigators said they were investigating shots allegedly fired into their territory from across the Ukraine border where fighting was raging between government troops and pro-Moscow rebels.
"At the moment armed clashes are taking place on the territory of Ukraine in the region of Dolzhansky as a result of which the territory of the Russian Federation was fired upon," Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement.
Experts had been dispatched to the location to check on the alleged shooting, the statement said.
Daily clashes between separatist insurgents and the country's armed forces have claimed at least 360 lives since a rebel uprising began in April.
Kiev accuses Moscow of being behind the rebellion and has alleged Russia is sending weapons and fighters across its porous border. Russia in turn has accused Kiev of violating the frontier.
Moscow said Friday that it had bolstered its troops near Ukraine to shore up the leaky frontier, as the U.S. warned that the Kremlin was massing "significant" forces along the border with its ex-Soviet neighbor.
