Muslim Scholars Reach Agreement to Release Officers from Arsal as Labweh Residents Block Aid Convoy

The Muslim Scholars Committee delegation succeeded on Wednesday in reaching an agreement with Islamist gunmen in the northeastern town of Arsal to extend a ceasefire in the area and release a number of officers detained in the region over the weekend.
It said during a press conference: “The ceasefire in Arsal will be extended for 24 hours and the gunmen have started to withdraw from the town.”
MTV television reported that the negotiations between the delegation and the gunmen led to an agreement to release three soldiers, who were detained by the gunmen.
Two of the captives have returned to their families, while the third is on his way home, it added.
The Muslim Scholars Committee said that the ceasefire in Arsal will be extended for 24 hours and the gunmen will begin to withdraw from the town within the deadline.
On the detained soldiers and Internal Security Forces members, the delegation said that 17 ISF members and 10 soldiers are still being held by the gunmen and they are “all alive and well.”
It revealed that it will hold “arduous” negotiations with the gunmen to ensure their release, urging the media to remain objective in its coverage of the developments.
Some false media claims are affecting the negotiations, stressed the delegation.
“None of the residents in Arsal aided the gunmen and the media should remain objective in reporting the news,” it said.
Earlier, residents of the neighboring town of al-Labweh prevented an aid convoy from reaching Arsal on suspicion that the relief may be headed towards the gunmen.
Head of al-Labweh municipality Ramez Amhaz told MTV: “The state does not exist in Arsal and therefore we are stopping the convoy from passing through.”
“Who is this aid headed to? It may fall in the hands of the al-Nusra Front or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant,” he declared.
“The gunmen should demonstrate goodwill and release the detained soldiers. We will allow the convoy to pass once that happens,” he demanded.
Commenting on the development, the Muslim Scholars Committee delegation condemned the action, saying: “There is a pressing need for food aid for Arsal and there are wounded who need medical help.”
“Is it acceptable to punish a whole town for the errors of some refugees or residents?” it wondered.
“Arsal is paying the price of the absence of the state. This is shameful,” it declared.
Earlier, clashes between the army and terrorists raged on the outskirts of Arsal.
The state-run National News Agency said the gunbattles concentrated in the areas of Ras al-Sarej, Ain Ata and Wadi al-Raayan.
The army also repelled an attack on a checkpoint in Ain al-Shaab, which lies between Arsal and the town of al-Labweh.
Several militants were killed, the agency said.
Arsal municipal chief Ali al-Hujairi told LBCI that a large number of gunmen withdrew from Arsal. Some remained on its outskirts, he said.
Several residents confirmed his claims, saying the fighters, who overran the town on Saturday, were nowhere to be seen.
The fighting has been raging since the weekend when the army arrested a member of the Qaida-linked Nusra Front. It marks the first time that militants battling Syrian President Bashar Assad have carried out a large-scale incursion into Lebanon.
In an apparent gesture of goodwill, the militants released on Tuesday three policemen whom they had been holding captive along with 17 others.
Scores of soldiers have been killed and injured in the fighting. Another 22 soldiers are missing, possibly having been taken hostage.
Arsal, which lies some 90 kilometers from Beirut, is a predominantly Sunni town of 40,000 whose population has almost tripled because of the presence of Syrian refugees and rebels.

Kudos to the army for its achievements.
but these achievements clearly deny hizbushaitan claims:
- the army is more than qualified to defend lebanon
- hizbushaitan fighting in syria did not prevent what is going on
- ....
so why is hizbushaitan still armed?
the army should take over the whole country.

The army and HA complete each other and cooperate. It is not one versus the other.
The army has my full respect and support, but let's not blind ourselves: the fight is far from over, and the sad truth is that they are struggling just with 1 village occupied by a bunch of terrorists. They barely have enough ammo and equipments for that task, and they have to wait while our politicians beg France to release weapons paid by Saudi...
What would happen if several villages were simultaneously overrun for ISIS/da3esh/whatever? What would happen if israel attacked? Would France still provide us with weapons (assuming they end up doing it now, it would be much less likely if we needed weapons against israel)
Your bias due to hatred for HA makes you see thing constantly as army or resistance, while in reality they both need each other, support each other, and complete each other.
Long live the Army, Long live the Resistance.

If the Army attempts to stop your sectarian resistance (as it should) from going to Syria and Iraq, will you still be saying Long Live the Army. I am sure NOT. Spare us your hypocrisy and sectarianism.

The army is much wiser than that, they have no reason to stop HA from securing the border with Syria. I trust whatever decision the army makes, it will be reasonable and the resistance will abide by it.
The army command knows very well the risks of having villages on the syrian side of the border crawling with takfiri freaks.
When HA went in, you guys like to forget that quseyr was crawling with anywhere between 5 and 10 thousand terrorist fighters, which had no logical strategic reason besides preparing an attack on the bekaa. Check out a map, see how quseyr is situated at the top of the bekaa plateau, it's an open corridor without even mountains to slow them down.

The army couldnt go inside syria, but HA could, with the syrian command's full blessing. If they hadent done this, we wouldnt be dealing with just one problem in arsal (the one area that remained a safe haven for terror thanks to m14 cover), we would have the same situation in dozens of villages in the northen part of the bekaa.

oh so the saudi ams deal is a reality now according to @citymowaten!!!

oh come on mr moderator, i cant say eagldown is not smart? it's a simple truth...
for the third time:
i said "assuming they end up doing it now"
it's not a reality until effective weapons are delivered.

flamethrower, your broken record is getting old, boring, and routine. You are the only one who constantly reports others when they don't agree with you. You have a vendetta against certain posters and it is obvious to all. If you want to contribute, then please do so and spare us your uncalled for wisdom and propaganda. And stay within acceptable norms and mind your language, because others are also capable of using the same.

only you would have the time to repost not one time not two times but three times!!! Get a life seriously!

The argumentative bankruptcy will always fall in the M8 camp, best tool that M8 use is fear mongering.

FT - M14 is at the forefront of disarming all militias in Lebanon. This included Palestinians, Syrian and Lebanese militias. Indeed, it was the Hizb that opposed the disarming of Palestinians in the camp and not m14.

long before iraq, hizbushaitan actions have been open to all those who want to see.
who is defying the Lebanese state and the international community by refusing to turn over the killers of Hariri and others?
who is defying the Lebanese state by refusing to turn over the wanted guy in the case of boutros harb?
what about the terrorism executed in 1 ayar?
who is supporting the terrorist syrian regime and not allowing for the trial of samaha?
and for the last time, those sunni terrorist extremist are in my eyes in the same basket of hizbushaitan.
both of these terrorist groups are murderers and should be eradicated.
if you do not understand that, then you are just a blind m8 follower, and you have you stupidity to blame for not seeing the reality of things.

Rayan - ISIL was about to be wiped out by the Syrian opposition was it not for the support of the Syrian regime that provided air and artillery support to ISIL as well as launching massive attacks on the rebels - enabling ISIL to survive and expand on the expense of the rebels. Now is ISIL bad? Very bad. Indeed terribly bad. But ISIL will become stronger and stronger as we do not build the institution of governance including a strong army. Sectarian militias like Hezbollah is a major cause for the rise of ISIL. Hezbollah was instrumental in the Syrian regime assault on the rebels that relieved ISIL. In addition, A shia Hezb and Salafi ISIL feed on each other and highlighting the sectarian aspect of the conflict. The only is to build our army: Arm it, instill a draft and set up a national reserve like they have in Israel (with all of its evil). If we love our nation, we have to do more than just type on naharnet.

_-flamethrower_ : get a life you troll, arent you tired of creating fake accounts impersonating others? goes to show how morally bankrupt m14ers are

Truth be told. Isis was only able to thrive in areas whose Sunni inhabitants supported them. Arsel did not support their operation into Lebanon although they did support them against Assad. Embrace your brethren and aid them that is the only way. The majority of the Sunni population of Lebanon have proven themselves worthy of being Lebanese before anything else.

Some of the people on this forum are stupid. "The army can't go into Syria but Hezbollah could with Syria's blessing" or whatever nonsense, are you insane? If Hezbollah was a resistance like it claims, it should have stayed in Lebanon and helped the army protect the border. It's because Hezbollah went to fight in Syria that all these damn terrorists are attacking the army. Even now while the army is being attacked, Hezbollah is staying in Syria and letting the ill-equipped army fight alone. So much for resistance.

Keyword "most" of its fighters, and even that part is debatable is we don't know how many fighters Hezbollah actually has. Regardless, ALL of their fighters should be in Lebanon. Then 14 March wouldn't mind them fighting ISIS inside Lebanon, as they would be fighting all types of aggression, not just Israeli aggression.

in 2012 bashar assad failed to start a wide sectarian strife in lebanon with the samaha mamlouk bombing plots and in 2013 with blowing up the mosques of tripoli but it seems that he is succeeding in 2014

But then again it stopped being a resistance a long time ago. Those who support Hezbollah don't even realise that Hezbollah needs Israel. They need Israel because if they weren't occupying Shebaa Farms (which really belongs to Syria), Kfarshouba Hills and Ghajar, then Hezbollah's weapons would be illegitimate. Hezbollah does not plan on liberating these territories because if they are liberated, Hezbollah can no longer claim they are resisting Israeli aggressions on Lebanese sovereignty, which is the reason for their existence.

The gunmen will starve the people. They'd steal all the aid for themselves. They crucify people and leave them to hang for days, you think they're gonna share the food?

Don't you just love the irony: The pro-Hizb Labweh are doing to Arsal what Israel has been doing to Gaza.

what a bunch of BS: now FT wants us to believe that hizbushaitan is an open minded party of all confessions :)
ft: you probably believe yourself talking, thus I suggest strongly you go and get checked by a doctor, as you are delusional.

if HA has members of all sects, why doesn't the genius explain why all the so called "martyrs" funerals of HA take place only in Dahieyeh, Baalbeck, or the South...
