Fierce clashes erupted on Saturday evening in the Wadi al-Raayan area in the outskirts of the Bekaa town of Arsal which borders Syria, state-run National News Agency reported.
“The sounds of rockets and shells are being heard in the northern Bekaa's towns,” NNA said.
The agency did not say anything about the parties involved in the fighting but LBCI television had earlier reported “fierce clashes” in Wadi al-Raayan between Hizbullah and unidentified gunmen.
The development comes only hours after the Islamic State jihadist group announced executing a Lebanese soldier it had kidnapped during fierce clashes with the army in and around Arsal in early August.
The IS had also beheaded a Lebanese army sergeant in late August.
The troops were taken hostage as Syria-based militants from the IS and al-Qaida-linked al-Nusra Front overran Arsal during the battle that started following the arrest of top militant Imad Jomaa.
The fighting ended a few days later but the militants kidnapped around 36 troops and policemen and took them to an area between Arsal's outskirts and Syria's Qalamun.
The battle in Arsal was the most serious border incident since the Syrian conflict erupted in March 2011.
Hizbullah has been taking part in the Syrian war for more than a year now, arguing that its military involvement in the neighboring country is necessary to fend off the threat of extremist groups.
The Lebanese group's assistance has helped the Syrian army regain control of most of Qalamun from rebel hands but pockets of resistance remain active in the region.

HA has been involved from the first week of the syrian revolution. Second, nasrallah said he send his terrorists to defend shia villages. The takfiri threat excuse came much much later.
when the clashes first started in syria in 2011 the rebels started claiming HA was involved, but nothing ever corroborated this empty accusation. i remember telling you guys that when and if HA got involved you would know it and it will be crystal clear. and that was exactly the case when they went into quseyr to clear out 10,000+ fighters massing at our border.
it took over two years of provocations, attacks, kidnappings, massacres in border villages before HA finally got involved. and now the beheading of lebanese soldiers was the final drop. no more mr. nice guy.
@terrorist: remember this, you asked for it.
I was thinking the same thing mowaten, no more mr. nice guy. Sometimes, I feel you and I and hammouds are the same person.
Even if all you said galaxy is true, I dont see what's wrong. What is the point you're trying to make here?
This is how I would describe the situation. Ha takes orders from Syria and Iran not from the state they belong to, everyone was and would be with Hezbollah if they are defending the Lebanese soil, where they failed in their strategy is in the pay back to Syria to sustain the weaponry bridge into Lebanon.
Lebanon needs a head of state 3 months ago without a head there is no body. Again those who did not show up to the parliament to discuss or elect a president are the same that continue to weaken the state and fight battles versus winning the war united.
