Syria's Assad Acknowledges Shrinking Army Manpower
Syria's President Bashar Assad acknowledged the shrinking ranks of his government's army in a rare public speech on Sunday, but insisted the force was still capable of beating rebel fighters.
Speaking in Damascus, Assad also said any "dialogue that is not based on the fight against terrorism would be meaningless".
Syria's army once had around 300,000 members, but has been roughly halved in size by deaths, defections and a rise in draft dodging, a fact that Assad acknowledged publicly on Sunday.
"There is a lack of human resources" in the army, he said, addressing representatives of economic organisations in a speech broadcast live on Syrian state television.
"But that doesn't mean we can talk about collapse," he insisted.
"We will resist... the armed forces are capable of defending the motherland."
Assad, whose opponents include Islamic State group jihadists, al-Qaida-affiliated fighters and other rebel groups, also made reference to army withdrawals from parts of the country.
In recent months, government forces have been pushed out of almost all of the northwestern province of Idlib, as well as losing the ancient city of Palmyra.
"There were areas where we wanted to show our commitment," he said.
"But the army cannot be on every part of the territory."
"In some areas, residents have taken up weapons alongside the army and that has had a decisive impact on the fighting."
More than 230,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 with anti-government protests before spiraling into a civil war after a regime crackdown.
Well, if the Syrian army are so weak and dwindling. Then how come your takfiri heroes haven't been able to oust him yet?
That is exactly what you people said 4 years ago.
You be patient yourself, you are going to need it.
mystic what is exactly happening in Yemen these days? I have not read any news lately....
lol yeah they all disappeared at the same time.... and got replaced by the troll who makes up an account every 5 minutes;)
4 years ago your master was saying that nothing was going on in Syria...and he's still saying that ASSad is in control (of Damascus?...barely?
موفداً إعلامياً من التيّار «الوطني الحرّ» زار دمشق قبل أيام، يتفاخر أمام محدّثيه بأنّه لمس تحسُّن الأوضاع لمصلحة نظام الأسد.
can't wait for the day when this POS is dragged through the streets of Damascus...
I find it strange that the posters are looking at the conflict in Syria as a win/lose scenario. Be careful guys, this could turn out to be a lose/lose scenario for the citizens of Syria as well as for Lebanon.
Assad was a non-secular dictator who had ambitions to control Lebanon as well. But the ISIS/Qaeda wings of the rebels are Islamist Barbarians who have ambitions not only in Lebanon but all over the Middle East and beyond. So I hold on to what I always said: I want both sides to Lose and for the moderate forcces (civilized, non-secular, Democratic) to win.
St.flamethrower: but Obama did not lose control of 70% of the USA and Obama does not claim he represents 90% of the American people. Nice try flametroll
"There is a lack of human resources" in the army, Assad said.
It does not make sense since the trolls on here say 90% of the Syrian people support assad and consider him as god.
