Bkirki Christian Summit Rejects Cabinet Resignation amid Presidential Vacuum

Christian spiritual leaders convened at Bkirki on Monday to voice their support for the cabinet of Prime Minister Tammam Salam, demanding an end to the ongoing vacuum in the presidency.

The gatherers said in a statement: “We reject the resignation of the government and support efforts to preserve it given the presidential vacuum.”

The country will not be able to tolerate vacuum in the presidency and government should the latter resign, they explained.

Moreover, they stressed: “Salam's efforts should be backed with the election of a head of state, which is an issue that concerns all Lebanese.”

Lebanon has been without a president since May 2014 when the term of Michel Suleiman ended without the election of a successor.

Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise candidate have thwarted the polls.

Addressing civil society protests that have been demanding an end to the garbage management crisis, the gatherers at Bkirki said: “We support their demands, but highlight the danger of the tensions on the street in the wake of the regional unrest.”

They expressed their backing for the rallies “on condition that they do not damage public property or take a violent turn through thugs.”

Furthermore, they urged politicians to set aside their disputes and prevent them from affecting the people's daily lives and instead reach consensus on a number of pending issues.

The spiritual summit was expected to include the participation of Muslim leaders, but they failed to attend due to undisclosed reasons.

The “You Stink” civil society activists have been staging demonstrations demanding an end to the trash crisis.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets on Saturday to call for the resignation of Environment Minister Mohammed al-Mashnouq and for Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq to be held accountable for security forces' use of force against demonstrators a week earlier.

They gave the cabinet 72 hours to meet their demands otherwise be faced with “escalatory measures.”

the shiite islamic council requested the postponement of the summit because they have orders from hezbollah. They don't like what Bkirki was about to say: Elect a President Now.

The Muslim participation in the Bkirke summit was positioned at the request of the Higher Shiite Council who got their marching orders from Hassan and Berri. Berri's initiative yesterday, and Hezballah's unequivocal "complete support" of it, is aimed at keeping them both in full control of the leavers of the dialogue and it's direction. A spiritual summit under the hospices of Bkirke and the statement committing out of it would as usual irk the Shiite duo. Remember how the last time a summit was held in Bkirke, after he agreed and supported the closing statement complete with commemorative group photo of the smiling participates, Sheikh Abdel Amir Qabalan was forced to announce once he got back that he disagrees with some of the summit's statment's clauses.

Our country faces lots of crisis,
If we specify a day for every crisis maybe we need the whole year,
Let us think deep, assuming we get rid of all politicians, what will be the alternative,
The parliament is not ideal but the alternative would be the jungle rule
In this jungle rule, people interests will not be present.
Whoever is honest, educated and impartial should manifested for only one priority
ELECTING A PRESIDENT
All other crisis can be delt with later,
Demonstrating for any other cause is a manipulation by some political parties (by diverting the attention away from the main cause)
Our boat is lost we need a someone to correct its way.
We should demonstrate for a FAIR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION first of all
We should desert any MP who refuse to go and elect in the parliament.
We may have dozens of candidates we need to elect one of them TODAY BEFORE TOMORROW
Your individual interest is a consequence of the national interest which is ELECTING A PRESIDENT

I am with you Peace guest, the election of a new president is now almost 16 months old, so let us start with the election of a new president, but please, one that is not of dinosaur stock, we've Dimianos Kattar and Ziad Baroud for example, clean, young, honest and have no blood on their hands. Once a new president is elected then the procedure of ridding us of the current parliament and cabinet can begin in earnest. The main thing is, let's get started, but the president has to be given a lot more powers since we've seen how paralyzed the nation has been with Taef, thus, a strong president can make the whole difference.

Nabil is particularly "dirty". Just look as how he tries to imitate the Caporal when he speaks....may they go to hell.

Can't have your cake and eat it too. Salam has to go. The environment minister should be tarred and feathered and beaten by children in public then Hariri might get the message. PS The moderators of Naharnet should also be beaten but not as hard as those of Daily Star....this is true as all know..

what do you think is going to happen when the march 14th crowd all go to saudi arabia to fill their pockets with cash, and their mouth with words from the saudis, not once but twice a year?

Default-user-icon PEACE (Guest) 01 September 2015, 02:22

I hope everyone think deeply and honestly,
I recognize that: if we go on manifesting every day there would be enough crisis to cover all the year.
However,
In the absence of a president, parliament and ministerial cabinet ( ultimate wish of HA/FPM), only the jungle rules take over.
The utmost priority is to manifest massively for the election of a president through the available parliament (which is better than vacuum).
I will not comment on Nabil's talk as he is a passive beneficiary eating the scrap of the family.
