Rahi: Trash Protesters Must Pour Demands in Electing a President

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi voiced calls on the protesters demanding a solution to the trash crisis to pour their efforts in calling for election of a president.

“Put right your demands and pour your efforts into one major request which is electing a president as soon as possible,” said al-Rahi from Aley where he is on a three-day visit to the region.

He hailed the efforts of Agriculture Minister Akram Shehayyeb and the plan he set to solve the trash crisis saying: “We thank Shehayyeb for the road map he set as a solution to the problem, and we hope that it paves way for decentralization.”

Lebanon has been swept by a series of demonstrations since July, after the closure of the Naameh landfill, protesting a waste management crisis that drowned the country in garbage and left the atmospheres of the once Switzerland of the Levant country air-filled with foul odor of rotting waste.

The government approved in a marathon session late Wednesday a waste management plan proposed by Shehayyeb.

Lebanon has been without a president since May 2014 when the term of Michel Suleiman ended without the election of a successor.

Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise presidential candidate have thwarted the polls.

Your Eminence
I told the protesters to pour their anger at demanding 24/24 renewable electricity and renewable president elected by the armed shia majority.

Your Eminence, the youth have been demanding exactly that, it's just that the mafia of M8 and M14 refuse to listen, each one wants the candidate of their choice when none is already a bad starter. What you ought to do Y.E is to nominate a young person, masalan Ziad Baroud, or Dimianos Kattar or someone of the like, and certainly not an old hog like Jean Obeid or the like. Your Eminence, remaining passive does not work anymore, you nominate, I gave you a few headers.

Rahi's call to elect a president is falling on deaf ears. As a patriarch he could do more to ensure that there is a viable candidate for the post, to date there is no candidate that all parties are willing to accept...as a spiritual leader of the maronites, he should come up with a list of viable candidates that are qualified and throw his weight behind them...enough wasting time! He should demand it and put his foot down. The country is drowning in chaos and this most important Christian post is slowly being forgotten as time goes by. Time to rise up to the occasion Patriarch.

I hope the intelligent youth generation listens and acts wisely to the truth.
While the trash crisis is very important like other crises the priority remains in ELECTING a president by the available parliament.
I fully understand Phoenix but his eminence cannot nominate anyone other way many of other candidates may claim being POPE not only Batrak as Abbas sarcastically commented
Elections means openness to all candidates bad or good young or old.
The importance for the youth is to force this Election of a president.
Our parliament is far from being ideal but in its absence chaos and jungle rules prevail.
While the boat is drifting we need a CAPTAIN to save it before repairing broken furniture.
