Gemayel Calls for Open-Ended Cabinet Sessions to End Political Deadlock

Head of the Kataeb Party MP Sami Gemayel highlighted on Wednesday the importance of the cabinet in resolving Lebanon's pending problems, stressing that it is the only state institution that has not been completely “crippled”.

He said during a press conference: “Resolving Lebanon's problems should take place through open-ended cabinet sessions.”

“We received a pledge from the PM and Speaker that cabinet will convene next week,” he revealed.

Moreover, he stressed the need for officials to adhere to the constitution in ending disputes, criticizing proposals that contradict it, such as those on electing a president through the people, as repeatedly suggested by Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun.

“Given the latest regional developments, it is becoming more apparent that neither a president from the March 8 or 14 camps will be elected as new head of state,” he noted.

A new president should not be affiliated with either camp, but he should be a consensual one, the MP stated.

Gemayel called on various figures to cease placing “crippling” conditions before cabinet and parliament, demanding that they be allowed to resume their responsibilities without any obstruction.

“We are prepared to make any sacrifice to end the crisis,” declared the MP.

“We are tired of the obstruction of cabinet and parliament. All officials should assume their responsibilities for the sake of the people,” he added.

“We can no longer prolong the current situation in Lebanon. It is time that we achieve the people's interests,” he demanded.

On the Kataeb's participation at the latest national dialogue sessions, Gemayel said: “We are aware that each party is seeking its own interests, but we took part in the talks to pressure powers to implement the constitution.”

“We are not here to cover up for the shortcomings of others,” he added.

Rival political parties are tackling the presidential crisis and other controversial issues at a national dialogue chaired by Speaker Nabih Berri. They held their third session on Tuesday.

The country's top Christian post has been vacant since the term of President Michel Suleiman ended in May last year.

Huge differences between the March 8 and 14 alliances have caused the vacuum.

Mr Gemayel ,
You insisted to discuss and finalise the presidency as first item on the agenda,
Why are you turning blind eye and one ear hearing about jumping to other issues touching the constitution and serving Iranian agenda.
Putting myself in your shoes I would withdraw from such comedy unless the presidency is the only item tackled until finding a solution.
Do I have to conclude that politician has to change masks ?
Presidency first until solved.
