Syria's government agreed on Monday to allow aid into several besieged areas including the starvation-struck town of Madaya, the U.N. said, in an apparent goodwill gesture ahead of peace talks.

"The government has in principle approved convoys... to Madaya and simultaneously to Kafraya and Fuaa," said Jens Laerke, spokesman of the U.N.'s humanitarian agency.

Madaya is besieged by pro-government forces, while Fuaa and Kafraya in northwest Syria are surrounded by rebel groups.
