Report: Iran Seeking Regional Package Deal to Resolve Presidential Impasse

W460

Iran, not Hizbullah, is behind the ongoing vacuum in the presidency in Lebanon, reported the Saudi daily Okaz on Sunday.

Western diplomatic sources in Beirut explained that Tehran is seeking a “complete package deal that covers the entire region, which includes the presidency.”

Iran is waiting for how developments will unravel in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq, continued the sources.

Lebanon has been without a president since the term of Michel Suleiman ended in May 2014 without the election of a successor.

Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps have thwarted the polls.

Hizbullah earlier this year said it would boycott the presidential elections until it receives guarantees that its candidate, Change and Reform bloc chief MP Michel Aoun, is elected head of state.

The March 14 camp and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat have repeatedly accused Iran of being responsible for the delay in electing a president.

However, in every one of his speeches nassrallah says Iran does not interfere in Lebanon's affairs or even the regions' affairs for that matter.

That's what he's been told by his masters. Actually all his speeches since entering Syria has been pure fiction.

Do the Lebanese want to have an Iranian model in Lebanon?

We don't need a President, we already have one: wali al Fakih

Nasrallah is the de facto President of Lebanon. That's why he doesn't want to end the present vacuum situation.
