Berri: No Justification to Delay Cabinet, We Share FPM Viewpoint on Electoral Law
Speaker Nabih Berri announced Wednesday that “there is no justification to further delay the cabinet line-up” after the latest developments, noting that his AMAL Movement and the Free Patriotic Movement have “identical viewpoints” on the electoral law.
“There is no justification to further delay the cabinet line-up and the issuance of the decrees, after the obstacles over the distribution of portfolios were resolved,” Berri said during his weekly meeting with lawmakers in Ain el-Tineh.
“We have fulfilled our promise and offered all the concessions and support needed to facilitate the formation of the cabinet,” Berri noted, adding that he expects a quick approval of the ministerial policy statement.
Turning to the issue of the electoral law, the parliament speaker said: “The issue that we agree the most on with the FPM is the electoral law.”
“We have identical viewpoints over several formulas containing proportional representation and this consensus predates the election of the president,” Berri added.
He also reiterated his rejection of the 1960 electoral law, noting that “its bad repercussions are very clear and obvious.”
